Police: Man Jumps From Taxi to Avoid Paying, Gets Hit by Car, Breaks Leg

Redlands police say the man jumped out of a cab and ran so he wouldn't have to pay-- but he was stopped when a vehicle slammed into him.

The following was reported by Local Editors Guy McCarthy and Renee Schiavone:

A man's leg broke this week when he was hit by a car in Redlands-- after he apparently tried to ditch a cab to avoid paying a fare, police said.

The incident occurred about 10 p.m. Tuesday June 4 at University and Sylvan Boulevard, Redlands spokesman Carl Baker said.

The man jumped out of a taxi and ran without paying and he was struck by a black Nissan Altima going south on University, Baker said in a phone interview Thursday. The 55-year-old Redlands resident suffered a broken leg and other injuries, and he was hospitalized in stable condition.

As of Thursday morning the man had not been charged or arrested, Baker said.
