One person died Thursday in a single-vehicle crash with fire on Interstate 10 between Thousand Palms and Bermuda Dunes, according to Cal Fire and the California Highway Patrol.
A vehicle on fire was reported at 11:29 a.m. Jan. 2 on the eastbound 10 near Cook Street, according to the CHP.
"Firefighters responded to a solo-vehicle traffic collision with fire," Melody Hendrickson of Cal Fire-Riverside County said in a statement. "There is one confirmed fatality (gender and age unknown at this time)."
Coroner's personnel were requested and the freeway was open in both directions as of 1:20 p.m., a CHP dispatcher in Indio said in a phone interview.
Agencies that responded include the Highway Patrol and the Sheriff's Department.
