One Hospitalized As Truck Flips, Catches Fire on Highway 74

Fire officials report that a truck flipped near Mountain Center, and caught fire. The driver was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

An asphalt truck flipped Wednesday on a highway south of Idyllwild, catching fire and  temporarily blocking lanes going in both directions, according to the California Highway Patrol.

It happened around 11 a.m. on state Route 74 at the turnoff to Mountain Center, according to fire and CHP logs.

A CHP dispatcher tells Banning-Beaumont Patch that it was an asphalt truck which overturned on the roadway.  By 1:20 p.m., the wreckage had been cleared, and the roadway was back open.

When the truck flipped, it caught fire and the Riverside County Fire Department, along with the U.S. Forest Service, responded to put out the flames, according to Riverside County Fire Department Spokesman Mark Annas.

One person inside the truck sustained moderate injuries in the crash, and was taken to a local hospital, he added.

It wasn't immediately clear what led to the crash.
