An off-duty police officer died today in a motorcycle accident Thursday on the Riverside (91) Freeway in which he was vaulted into oncoming traffic.
According to broadcast reports, he was a San Bernardino police officer, though a California Highway Patrol officer could not immediately confirm that.
The officer was headed west about 9 a.m., east of Grand Avenue, in the carpool lanes when a car next to him swerved into his lane, CHP Officer Travis Monks said.
The motorcycle rider "became airborne," went over the center divider and into eastbound lanes, where he was struck by a vehicle, Monks said.
All westbound lanes and one eastbound lane were temporarily closed to accommodate the investigation.
