Murder Charges Filed Against Chris Dorner in Beaumont Man's Death

The Riverside County District Attorney's office has filed one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder against rogue ex-cop Christopher J. Dorner.

Fired Los Angeles Police Department Officer Christopher Jordan Dorner, who has been the target of a massive week-long police manhunt and is suspected of killing a total of three people, was charged Monday in Riverside County with capital murder for the shooting death of Riverside Police Officer Michael Crain.

Crain, who lived in Beaumont and worked for the Riverside Police Department, had deep roots in Southern California-- as he was born in Anaheim, raised in the Riverside area, and graduated from Redlands High School, according to police.  He served two tours in Kuwait as a Marine and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, where he taught Military Operations in Urban Terrain.

Crain's life was cut short Thursday, Feb. 7, when police say he was gunned down while stopped at a traffic signal in Riverside, on routine patrol.  He was 34.

"This was the first marked unit that he observed," Riverside Police Chief Sergio Diaz said at Monday's press conference, re-iterating the fact that authorities do not believe Dorner had any connection to Crain.

At Monday's press conference, Riverside County District Attorney Paul Zellerbach announced Dorner has been charged with one count of murder, along with two special circumstance allegations for the murder of a peace officer and the discharge of a firearm from a vehicle.

Those special circumstance enhancements make Dorner eligible for the death penalty, according to the District Attorney's office, who added that a no-bail warrant has also been issued for Dorner.

"Now that we have a no bail warrant out for his arrest, that allows him to be apprehended anywhere: within California, out of state, out of the country," Zellerbach said.  "So that assists law enforcement universally to have that complaint filed against [Dorner] and to have that warrant in the justice system.”

"In this case, it’s quite clear that an officer was murdered during the course and scope of his employment as a police officer, plus that Mr. Dorner shot his firearm from his vehicle-- both of which are characterized as separate special circumstances-- and that’s why we filed both of them.”

Three attempted murder charges were also filed in Riverside County, as it's believed Dorner shot at two Los Angeles Police Department officers in Corona 15-20 minutes prior to the Riverside shooting.  The third attempted murder charge is for Crain's partner, who remains hospitalized.

"The two LAPD officers were in Corona to provide protection for someone Dorner has named in his so-called manifesto," DA spokesman John Hall said.  "One officer was grazed on the head and the second uninjured in that shooting."

Dorner is also suspected of the Feb. 3 killing of 28-year-old college basketball assistant coach Monica Quan and her fiance, 27-year-old Keith Lawrence, whose bodies were found in Lawrence's car in the parking structure of their Irvine condominium building.

Orange County prosecutors have not announced any charges against Dorner, although an arrest warrant was issued under seal by a Superior Court judge on Wednesday. According to a federal arrest warrant affidavit filed Thursday, that arrest warrant notes that Dorner has been charged with multiple counts of murder.

On Sunday, a $1 million reward was announced by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for information leading to Dorner's arrest and conviction.

I have not seen anyone stating that they actually saw Mr. Dorner shoot any of these people; are there any actual witnesses? I do not condone what Mr. Dorner have been accused of, but I do believe in due process. To me, there has been a kill order so Mr. Dorner will never go to court to actually tell his side of the story. I lived in the LA community and I encountered the racist attitude of the LAPD. As a past military person I understand the process when officers approach you, but this action did not matter to the two officers that approached me. I believe Mr. Dorner and I wish that all that read this DEMAND that he be captured alive so that he can tell his story. We may find out that he did not shoot the individuals he is charged. LAPD is known to plant information on suspects.

Wow, I feel sorry for the guy. I have been a pro audio engineer for 30 years and that lounge is byRead More far the single worst venue for audio that I have ever experienced. Maybe they will let him set up outdoors so he can sound as good as he is. Jeremiah (Oz the Audioman to those who know me)

UPDATE on CV (nickname)...a tumor protruding from his right eye was removed yesterday - he now canRead More close the eye completely which, coupled with a fly mask, will keep the flies from laying eggs in his eye (a very nasty thing indeed). He has settled in with a gentle geriatric horse for a companion and is eating well (his weight was not an issue before - he obviously was fed decently). His club hoof causes him quite a lot of discomfort, but he manages to hobble around. A visit from the farrier is nextin line, to see if his discomfort can be aleviated. I don't believe he will ever be a riding horse, but he casts a nice shadow and is gentle and kind to be around. There is a peacefulness that eminates from his very being...

Niki- yes the plans have been updated to allow Banning and Yucaipa to share in the use of the newRead More ponds. It is an inter-agency plan that is beneficial to everyone. Why you consider having other entities share this project, which bonds us all together: they are paying to help build the new area so we, as ratepayers aren't hit with the whole bill, and we are going to finally get some recycled water into use from Yucaipa, Banning gets new wells, and no matter what- we have ultimate control over the use at all times- how that is a horror story I can't figure out. These plans were in the works for years, it was no secret. Its now being finalized by the board- as the details are now ironed out. The only horror story I see happening is how Beaumont refuses to make an agreement with the district to utilize their recycled water- and its not all the water district's fault like you think. Beaumont can't build unless they find some new sources of water. One of the reasons they pulled out is once they update their wastewater facility- they don't plan on wasting that recycled water just on landscaping . They are going to dump it into the basin itself for the water credit. Beaumont residents have no clue that their drinking water will eventually be more wastewater than water coming down the mountain. Sorry- but I think Fraser is doing a great job. If he hadn't got in there, the district would belong to Beaumont, who would take all the water they want regardless of impact studies, and siphon off all the money for their own uses. Guess you missed their lawsuit in the courts- the courts laughed them out. Beaumont is broke. The water district is financially sound.

Ben, it is unfortunate you are the victim of such serious misinformation. I thought I knew everyoneRead More at last night's BCVWD meeting. Who were you?
Claire Frémont June 15, 2013 at 09:59 am
I'm curious, Niki, what misinformation are you speaking of concerning Ben's comment? He appears toRead More be stating information that I've read about also. Beaumont did sue to try and take over the water district, they did get a cease and desist order to stop dumping their wastewater into the aquifer, and have pulled out of all negotiations with the district to supply them with recycled water. The district has made the arrangements instead with Yucaipa to take their water, with the hopes that someday Beaumont will come around. All these things are in agendas and downloads available to the public, which part are you disputing?
