Morongo Valley Man Fatally Injured Walking Across Highway 62

A 64-year-old man was struck by a vehicle and fatally injured Monday as he walked across Twentynine Palms Highway northeast of the San Gorgonio Pass, according to the San Bernardino County coroner.

Gerald Allyn Cross, a resident of Morongo Valley, was walking north across the road, also known as Highway 62, near Lanning Lane, about 9:45 p.m. July 1, coroner's personnel said in a statement.

"The driver of a red 2003 Dodge Neon was traveling eastbound on Twentynine Palms Hwy., in the number one traffic lane and struck Cross while he was in the roadway," coroner's personnel said. "Cross was pronounced dead at the scene."

Highway 62 crosses Lanning Lane north of Morongo Valley and southwest of Yucca Valley. The California Highway Patrol was investigating.
