Man Killed by Police Officer After Early Morning Confrontation at Banning Hotel

According to authorities, the man allegedly brandished a handgun before being shot by the officer.

A Banning police officer shot and killed a man Sunday during a confrontation at a hotel after the man allegedly brandished a handgun, a Riverside County sheriff's sergeant said.

The shooting took place at a hotel in the 3000 block of West Ramsey Street around 4 a.m., sheriff's homicide Sgt. Jeff Buompensiero said.

"A hotel employee reported to their dispatch center that a male adult, who was not a patron of the hotel, was knocking on hotel room doors looking for a female, and making patrons of the hotel feel uncomfortable," Buompensiero said.

An ambulance was called, but the man died at the scene, Buompensiero added. The victim's name was withheld pending notification of family members.

Riverside County sheriff's homicide detectives were investigating the fatal officer-involved-shooting at the request of Banning police, Buompensiero continued.

The unnamed officer who fatally shot the man -- an 18-year veteran of law enforcement -- was placed on administrative leave during the shooting investigation, according to Buompensiero.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call the Riverside sheriff's homicide unit at (760) 393-3500.
