Man Accused of Murder in Beaumont Shooting is Former Banning Developer

DeMario Anton Jackson, 25, was active in the Banning business community, said his defense attorney, Susanne Cho of Palm Desert.

A Banning man accused of murder in a shooting outside a Beaumont nightclub is a former developer who was active in the local business community, his defense attorney said Thursday.

DeMario Anton Jackson, 25, of Banning, was identified by law enforcement Wednesday as the alleged gunman in the shooting early Saturday that was followed by an officer-involved shooting.

Jackson allegedly shot and wounded Andy Albarran, 46, of Beaumont, who died later Saturday at a hospital, according to Beaumont police and Riverside County coroner's officials.

In the officer-involved shooting that followed, Jackson was shot "multiple times" and has undergone multiple surgeries, said Jackson's attorney, Susanne Cho of Palm Desert.

"I have not been allowed access to my client," Cho said Thursday afternoon. "I went first to the Riverside jail today, and he was not there. I then went to the Riverside County Regional Medical Center and confirmed he was there.

"The jailer and the nurse were on the phone," Cho said. "They would not let me see him. I am just coming from the hospital."

Jackson was well-known in the Banning business community, Cho said. He was active with the Banning city council when he was a developer, she said.

What preceded the shootings early Saturday in Beaumont remained unclear.

About 1:50 a.m. July 16, a Beaumont police officer was checking reports of a fight in the 500 block of Beaumont Avenue when he saw Jackson shooting another man, later identified as Albarran, said city of Beaumont spokeswoman Darci Mulvihill.

"The officer ordered Jackson to drop the weapon and after he refused, the officer shot him believing he was going to continue shooting," Mulvihill said in a statement released Wednesday.

Albarran and Jackson were transported to local hospitals, where Albarran succumbed to his injuries later Saturday, according to Mulvihill.

Jackson was arrested by sheriff's Central Homicide Unit investigators early Monday at Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley, according to inmate records.

He was booked at 2:55 a.m. Wednesday on suspicion of murder at Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside, according to inmate records and a city of Beaumont spokeswoman.

As of Thursday, Jackson's booking photo had not been released.

Jackson's bail was listed at $1 million. He has a court appearance scheduled Friday, according to inmate records.

Cho said she was positive Jackson was at the secure lockup facility at the hospital in Moreno Valley on Thursday afternoon. She said is trying to contact witnesses who saw what happened early Saturday, and she urged them to contact her at attycho@gmail.com or (760) 320-2000.

Both shootings were being investigated by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Law enforcement agencies have urged anyone with further information to contact Investigator Button with the Sheriff’s Department at (760) 393-3500 or the Detective Bureau of the Beaumont Police Department at (951) 769-8500.
