Freight train locomotive was ablaze as it came through Banning: Cal Fire

A westbound freight train was on fire when it passed through Banning on Sunday and the cause of the blaze was being investigated, a fire captain said this morning.

A train on fire was reported at 3:04 p.m. Sunday on the westbound tracks passing Hargrave Street, said Melody Hendrickson of Cal Fire-Riverside County.

About 20 firefighters responded and declared the fire out at 3:36 p.m. and contained to one locomotive, a Cal Fire battalion chief said.

Smoke from the fire drifted across eastbound  lanes  of Interstate 10 for a time, Hendrickson said.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was being investigated, Cal Fire-Riverside County Capt. Laura Germany said this morning in a telephone interview.
