Lawler Fire 100 Percent Contained

The mountain fire started early Sunday, about 4 miles north-northwest of Idyllwild in the Dark Canyon drainage, according to the Forest Service.

A mountain fire that started early Sunday in windy conditions north of Idyllwild and near Highway 243 was declared 100 percent contained Tuesday afternoon.

With the 14-acre burned area now surrounded by fire lines, commanders hoped to have all hot spots extinguished and declare the fire fully controlled by 6 p.m. Jan. 13, a Forest Service spokeswoman said.

The Lawler Fire started about 3 a.m. Sunday in the Dark Canyon drainage near Highway 243 and about 4 miles north-northwest of Idyllwild, Kate Kramer of the U.S. Forest Service said.

About 75 personnel remained assigned to the incident, and before sundown Tuesday firefighters dealt with inside the fire perimeter, according to Kramer.

"Forest fuels in this area have been treated as part of the North Fork and Highway 243 fuel treatment projects of 2006 – 2009," Kramer said in an update. "Fuel reduction efforts have aided fire crews to suppress this fire safely and to defend the homes in the area."

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries on and they were both taken to a hospital for treatment.
