L.A. County Man Fatally Injured in I-10 Crash West of Cherry Valley

A Los Angeles County man was fatally injured Thursday morning in a crash on the 10 Freeway near County Line Road west of Cherry Valley, and he was pronounced deceased at Loma Linda University Medical Center, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred shortly after 10 a.m. Dec. 26, CHP Officer Darren Meyer of the San Gorgonio Pass Area CHP said in a statement.

A 51-year-old man from Hacienda Heights was driving a 2013 Volkswagen Passat west on Interstate 10 in the fast lane, approaching County Line Road, Meyer said.

Diane Cunningham, 70, of Cherry Valley, was driving her 2008 Suburban west on I-10 in the next lane over, to the left and slightly behind the Passat, Meyer said.

"For unknown reasons, the driver of the Passat began to lose control of his vehicle; the right rear of the Passat collided with the left front of the Suburban," Meyer said.

"The Passat continued spinning out of control across the westbound lanes of I-10, off the roadway and down the north dirt embankment," Meyer said.

The driver's side of the Passat crashed into a tree causing major damage, Meyer said. The driver of the Passat was taken to Loma Linda Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Cunningham was not injured, Meyer said. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

"Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected as contributing factors in this collision," Meyer said.

The crash occurred in Riverside County. The San Bernardino County coroner is assigned to investigate because the man from Hacienda Heights was pronounced deceased at the Loma Linda hospital in San Bernardino County.

The crash was being investigated by CHP Officer Kenneth Phillips.
