King Sentenced to Prison in Beaumont Shooting

Jesse King sentenced to 32 months for shooting a Beumont man

A probationer who shot a Beaumont man during a street confrontation pleaded guilty Thursday to felony charges and was immediately sentenced to nearly three years in prison.

Jesse Ray King, 23, was arrested and charged last month for the Aug. 13
attack that left a man with a gunshot wound to the upper body. He was on
probation at the time for a vandalism conviction.

King initially pleaded not guilty to assault with a firearm resulting in
great bodily injury, as well as being a convicted felon in possession of a
gun. However, following negotiations between his lawyer and the Riverside
County District Attorney's Office, the defendant changed his plea in exchange
for a lower sentence, according to court records.

Superior Court Judge Jorge Hernandez at the Banning Courthouse sentenced
King to 32 months behind bars for both felony counts. Had he been convicted
by a jury, King could have faced around eight years in prison.

According to Beaumont police, King shot a man during a daylight
altercation in the 1400 block of Cherry Avenue. The defendant fled the scene
before officers arrived, and a search of the area proved futile, a Beaumont
police spokeswoman said.

The following day, however, investigators learned that King was hiding
out in the 100 block California Avenue, prompting them to canvass the area, at
which point he was located and arrested without incident.

The victim, whose identity was not released, recovered from his wound.
According to court records, King was convicted in March of vandalizing a
church and being under the influence of illegal drugs. He had been sentenced
to 36 months probation and to take part in mandatory drug treatment, which he apparently never did.
