Inmate Crew Member Finds Live Ammunition During Cleanup
Deputies from the Cabazon station helped with the disposal of a 40mm incendiary smoke round that was found near the Badlands Landfill.
An inmate from the Larry Smith Correctional Facility working as part of a roadside cleanup crew found a round of live ammunition, according to a news release from the Riverside Sheriff's Department.
The crew was working on a roadway leading into the Badlands Landfill when the item was found. The inmate turned over the round to a supervisor, who called in a Hazardous Waste Inspector from Riverside County Waste Management. The inspector deemed it dangerous, and deputies from the Cabazon Sheriff's Station and the Sheriff's Department Hazardous Device Team was called to the scene.
Deputies determined the ammunition round was a a live, 40mm incendiary smoke round. They transported the item to a safe location, where it was destroyed.

Possession of live military ordnance is unlawful and dangerous, Sheriff's officials said in the release. Disposal of the items should be done by professionals.
Officials said if anyone should possess explosive items, or items they suspect to be explosives, they should contact the Riverside County Sheriff's Department Hazardous Device Team at (951) 955-6644, or their local Sheriff's station or law enforcement agency.
