A homeless woman suspected of leading police on a chase in a stolen Lexus was behind bars in Banning Thursday night.
Amber Nicole Bernardino, 21, was arrested in Palm Springs about 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday. The night before, someone had reported that Bernardino allegedly stole a Lexus GS3 sedan, Palm Springs police Sgt. Mike Kovaleff said.
About 5:50 p.m. Wednesday, an officer on patrol saw Bernardino, who knew the car owner's grandson, allegedly driving the car in the downtown Palm Springs area.
"Bernardino began speeding away from the PSPD Officer before any attempt at a traffic stop had been made," he said.
At that point, the woman—a convicted felon— apparently began speeding away, going over 70 mph and "driving recklessly" Kovaleff said.
The car was found nearby about 10 minutes later, and a handgun and stolen property were inside, Kovaleff said. Officers found Bernardino, who is a transient, in the 1100 block of Calle Rolph and arrested her, he said.
She was booked at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning and was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
