Girl Scout Rescued From Mt. San Jacinto Hiking Trail

The 12-year-old San Diego girl was on a wilderness hike with her troop when she was injured, according to sheriff's officials.

A 12-year-old Girl Scout from San Diego was recovering Monday, after she was hoisted down Mt. San Jacinto to safety over the weekend.

The unidentified girl was out hiking near the peak of the mountain with her troop Sunday afternoon when "she stumbled off the trail and fractured her ankle," according to Sheriff's Sergeant James Burton.

"A member of her troop was able to use her cell phone to contact Sheriff's Dispatch and request assistance," Burton said.

The sheriff's department sent up one of their helicopters to look for the girl, while volunteers from the Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit hiked up to her.

About four hours after getting the initial call for help, at around 8 p.m., the girl had been located and was loaded onto a hoist and into the helicopter, according to Burton.

"She was transported to the Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment," he added.

Burton reminded all hikers to be mindful of their own limitations when headed out on a wilderness hike.

“Always take into consideration your experience, knowledge of the terrain, weather and your personal physical limitations,” he said.
