Four chihuahua mix dogs were allegedly stabbed in Riverside over the weekend, two of them died, two sustained injuries so severe they were euthanized, and police were conducting an animal cruelty investigation, according to a county Animal Services spokesman.

Animal Services personnel responded the morning of Jan. 26 to a home in the 2000 block of Vermont Avenue in the Eastside neighborhood, Animal Services spokesman John Welsh said in a statement.

"Riverside Police officers were already at the property where the owner had reported that four of his dogs had been apparently stabbed," Welsh said.

The alleged attacks on the dogs happened sometime during the night or early morning hours Sunday, Welsh said.

"The dog owner told authorities he had a recent run-in with a man that he described as a transient," Welsh said. "The man and the dog owner argued and the man threatened him by saying he was going to "come back.'"

Here's more from Welsh's statement:

Animal Control Officer Dylan Gates recovered two dogs that had already died from injuries. The owner of the dogs took two of the injured pets inside his home, but the injuries were so severe that Officer Gates suggested that they be signed over for humane euthanasia.

Officer Gates transported the four dogs - all Chihuahua mixes - to the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley. A Riverside County Animal Services veterinarian will perform necropsies on all four of the dogs, as is standard for animal cruelty investigations.

Animal Services personnel were working in conjunction with the Riverside Police Department on the investigation, Welsh said.

How horrible. Poor little dogs. First of all, when the owner found that 2 were still alive, why did he not bring them to a vet. By calling the police and animal control wasted too much time. I would have rushed them to a vet and called the police on the way. If the rotten transient is caught, he needs to be stabbed to death.

What a headline! 2 died and 2 were euthanized? What is the difference - 4 dogs died, not 2. **** Jeremiah

@concerned citizen:....."Riverside Police officers were already at the property where the owner had reported that four of his dogs had been apparently stabbed..."...the police were already there, for whatever reason...so chances are the police called in animal control themselves.....that said, it is possible that the dog owner was overwhelmed and horrified to find all FOUR of his dogs either dead or dying. Either way I agree with you; it's horrible...I don't understand people who'd torture/ needlessly kill harmless little dogs. I am certain the person who did this is mentally ill.

The perp is a young adult homeless, probably in need of meds, certainly in need of lockup and a beating, but the homeowner might consider a second barrier to the fence at the sidewalk. It annoys me the have dogs come running up and lunging or jumping at a fence two foot away from where I'm walking, I resist the urge to lunge back but it's hard not to feel defensive and put out by these attempted/simulated attacks. I now carry my oak cane on all long walks, after a pit came through the open driveway gate and I thought I was going to break my foot kicking him back, after the second attack I found a brick, told the owner if the dog came at me again, his skull was getting crushed and than I'd find the owner. Didn't bother with PD, but wonder if I should have, because if the dipshit owner leaves the gate open again, it could be kids receiving the charge. Next time it happens, the dog gets hurt, and the owner gets my full attention, with PD to follow. None of that has a bearing on this sad story, even the tough breeds should be loved and protected against crazies or pedestrians like me.

It doesn't matter that the creep is homeless or mentally ill. All the more reason to rid the planet of him. The next time he kills it could be a child.

Not condoning the stabbing of four little dogs, at all..... HOWEVER if your animal, any animal comes after me to attack I will protect myself, appropriately and vigorously. (bd- bricks are good in a pinch, I once smacked a hyper possum with a toilet plunger when throwing Pepsi on it didn't work....true story... it was coming right for me.)

Those possums are usually bluffing, but it's better to play it safe RB.

Usually, yea I know...this one was NOT playing possum...it was acting "Cujo" ....so I uh, yelled (it was my WAR CRY) and grabbed what was handy. My family will say my "warrior battle cry" was more of a frightened child screech, but they are all big pants on fire liars. Possum = 0, me = 1.

This article sounds like a "Crock" ... Just my opinion! I have one of those lil ankle bitters and he would bark his head off w/ a stranger in the yard ... imagine 4 barking? What, did they line up or would they run all over the yard and the perp chasing them. Something doesn't sound right.

There's video of the transient messing at the fence line -and then apparently getting verbal with owner at an earlier point in the day. The owner had vinyl lattice affixed to the fence making it at four foot high but the loon could reach over, the little dogs just keep a coming at me walking by yards, so I can imagine they might continue to lunge even after the stabbing started, not recognizing the danger.

A follow-up on the article would be enlightening :) ...
