Forest Service Truck Overturns on 243: Temporary Closure

A U.S. Forest Service employee sustained minor injuries Saturday when he swerved his agency pickup to avoid another motorist on Highway 243, prompting a temporary closure of the road between Black Mountain Trail and Lake Fulmor, authorities said at the scene.

The solo vehicle crash occurred before 1:30 p.m. Aug. 17.

The Forest Service employee sustained minor scratches, Cal Fire personnel at the scene said. He normally does off highway patrol in the local area, which includes Black Mountain, a CHP officer at the scene said.

Many people headed up 243 toward Idyllwild were trying to get to the Jazz in the Pines event, scheduled Saturday and Sunday. Caltrans re-opened the 243 Friday for the first time since the fast-moving Silver Fire broke out Aug. 7 near Poppet Flats.

One lane of the road  was open at the crash scene by 2 p.m. Saturday.
