Felon Leads Police on Car, Foot Chase Through Hemet, San Jacinto

The man— from Moreno Valley— was ultimately taken into custody after he crashed his car, and a police officer caught up with him on foot, police said.

A 31-year-old Moreno Valley man was arrested Wednesday night, after police say he led them on a chase first in his car, then on foot.

Hemet Police Lt. Eric Dickson says it all started around 5 p.m. when the department got a call of a verbal dispute involving a male suspect parked at an apartment complex in the 500 block of E. Fruitvale Ave., near State Street.

When the caller told police the suspect's name, Ivan Turner, they realized they were dealing with a wanted felon for weapons charges and a PRCS (Post Release County Supervision /AB109) violation, according to Dickson.

"The first officer to arrive on scene encountered the suspect sitting in the described vehicle and attempted to contact him," he said.  "The suspect refused the officer’s commands to show his hands and sped off in the vehicle."

Turner allegedly led officers on a chase through the northeast portion of Hemet, and into San Jacinto, driving into oncoming traffic at one point, according to Dickson.

That vehicle pursuit ended when Turner crashed into two cars on Esplanade Ave., disabling his car— but not his desire to get away from police.

"The suspect then got out of the vehicle and fled on foot, jumping walls and running through yards," Dickson said.  "The pursuing officer was able to catch and take the suspect into custody a short distance later."

One of the drivers hit in the crash had to be taken to the hospital for possible internal injuries.

"The suspect was also transported to a local hospital for complaint of pain from the traffic collision he caused," Dickson said.
