An SUV collided with a big rig on the westbound Interstate 10 in Whitewater.

UPDATED: The collision occurred on westbound I-10, west of SR-62 and east of White Water Cutoff.

The Freightliner truck was towing a utility semi-trailer in the #3 lane at approximately 50 miles per hour, said CHP spokesman Darren Meyer. The brown SUV, driven by 33-year-old Samuel Felix of Calipatria, approached the truck at what was initially estimated to be 70 miles per hour. Felix rear ended the truck. The passenger in the SUV, a 62-year-old man also from Calipatria, was killed on impact.

Feix, suffering from major injuries, was transferred to Riverside Regional Medical Center where he was arrested for driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter. The driver of the truck, Sergiy Savchuk, 56, of Oceanside, was not injured.
