Elderly Man Dies on Idyllwild Trail

The hiker was found unresponsive on a trail above the Palm Springs Tram this weekend.

An 81-year-old Northern California man was found unresponsive on the San Jacinto Peak Trail this weekend and pronounced dead at a fire station in Idyllwild, officials report.

Ulrich Luscher of Orinda was identified by the coroner as the hiker found unresponsive in the wilderness area above the Palm Springs Tram, according to the Riverside County coroner's office.

The Riverside County Fire Department was contacted about Luscher at 2:29 p.m. Sunday and emergency personnel hiked into the wilderness area to find him, said fire spokeswoman Jody Hagemann.

The coroner estimated his time of death at about 4:30 p.m., when his body was taken to the Keenwild Fire Station on State Highway 243 in Idyllwild.

There were no signs of foul play, the coroner's office said.

It is sad that he died, but it looks like he truly enjoyed the wild if he was hiking in it at 81. He died doing what he enjoyed and was mobile until the end, which is more than can be said for most of us. **** Jeremiah

Lordy, I hope to live to 81, and if I do I want to go out doing something that makes me happy as this gentleman did. Sad, but a better end than most will have.
