CHP Crackdown: Thousands Cited for Distracted Driving in SoCal
Stats from last month's Distracted Driving crackdown are in, and thousands of people were ticketed for cell phone use and other distractions during April.
The California Highway Patrol focused heavily last month on cracking down on people driving while distracted, and ended up citing thousands of SoCal drivers.
In the CHP Border Division-- which is made up of the San Diego, El Cajon,
Winterhaven, El Centro, Temecula, Blythe, Indio, San Gorgonio Pass, Westminster,
Santa Ana, and Capistrano areas-- a total of 2,936 tickets were issued, according to CHP officer Darren Meyer.
Those numbers were broken down as follows:

- 238 Texting Cites
- 246 Other Distracted Driving Cites
More locally, in the San Gorgonio Pass, only a fraction of those tickets were given:
- 143 Cell Phone Cites
- 17 Texting Cites
- 4 Other Distracted Driving Cites
Each month, the California Highway Patrol focuses on a different safety issue. April was distracted driving month, and this month, May, is motorcycle safety awareness month.
