Car Plunges 100 Feet Off Road Near Idyllwild

The accident happened about 8:45 a.m. on state Route 243, near Stonewood Canyon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A motorist was injured Monday when her car went off the road and plunged down a 100-foot embankment near Idyllwild.

The accident happened about 8:45 a.m. on state Route 243, near Stonewood Canyon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The unidentified driver was southbound on 243 when she apparently lost control of the car, which veered off the highway. She was able to get out of her vehicle after it came to rest. However, because of an unspecified injury, the woman was unable to climb back up to the roadway, according to the CHP.

A Riverside County fire crew got her into an ambulance, which transported her to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs for treatment.

As of 11 a.m., the southbound side of the highway remained closed as authorities retrieved the car and conducted an investigation. The northbound side was open, with CHP officers directing traffic going both directions through the area.
