Canadian Woman ID'd in Deadly Crash

A pedestrian who was struck this week while walking in a downtown Palm Springs street has been identified as a woman from Canada.

An 84-year-old Canadian woman has been identified in this week's deadly crash in Palm Springs.

Harriet A. Beichman of Naramata, British Columbia, died Tuesday at the scene of the crash near downtown Palm Springs, according to the Riverside County Coroner's Office.

The crash, reported at 5:52 p.m. on South Palm Canyon Drive north of Avenida Palmera, happened when a Kia Sedona van struck the woman, according to Palm Springs Police Sergeant Mike Kovaleff.

Kovaleff said Beichman was walking west across the northbound lanes of the street-- outside of the crosswalk-- when struck by the minivan north of Avenida Palmera.

The driver stayed at the scene, and neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be factors in the collision, Kovaleff said. He said charges weren't being sought against the driver, whose name was withheld.
