Cabazon Deputies, Volunteers Locate Lost Hiker Near Palm Springs

The Covina man spent the night on the mountainside, and was brought to safety Monday morning, according to sheriff's officials.

A hiker who had been reported missing was located Monday on a trail in the Palm Springs area by a team of Cabazon sheriff's deputies and volunteers, a sheriff's sergeant said.

Louis E. Perez of Covina was reported missing about 10:40 p.m. Sunday near the "Cactus to Clouds" trailhead near the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, sheriff's Sgt. Anthony Williams said.

"(He) was reported missing by a relative after not returning on time and believed to be in need of assistance," Williams said.

Volunteers from the Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit pinpointed the location of Perez's cellphone near Black Mountain campground north of Palm Springs. A sheriff's helicopter found Perez about 9:40 Monday morning near the campground, and deputies escorted him back to his vehicle at the Cactus to Clouds trailhead, Williams said.

"Perez was not injured and appeared to be in good spirits," Williams added.  "Perez did not require medical treatment."
