UPDATE: Brush Fire Breaks Out in Whitewater, Contained at 90 Acres

The fire was reported at 2:16 p.m. in Whitewater Canyon, near the windmills, according to fire officials.

Update 7:45 p.m.: Fire officials report that a blaze in the Whitewater Canyon is now fully contained.

The estimated size is 90 acres, according to Riverside County Fire Department Spokesman Mark Annas.

"Firefighters will remain on scene for mop up," Annas said.

Update 6 p.m. A fire burning near wind turbines in the Whitewater area east of Cabazon scorched an estimated 80 acres of 5:10 p.m. Tuesday, a Cal Fire spokeswoman said.

The fire was considered 25 percent contained, Jody Hagemann of Cal Fire-Riverside County said in an update. About 150 firefighters were assigned at one point, along with two tanker planes and one helicopter, according to Hagemann.

There were no structures threatened or evacuations requested, but there was no word on whether any of the costly wind turbines in the area were threatened by the fire.

A fire broke out Tuesday afternoon in the Whitewater area, quickly burning an estimated 20 acres, Cal Fire officials reported.

The fire was reported in the area of Whitewater Canyon Road and Gorgonio View at 2:16 p.m., according to Riverside County Fire Department Spokesman Mark Annas.

By 2:55 p.m., 20 acres had burned near the windmills in Whitewater Canyon, he reported.  No structures are threatened as of the posting of this report.

Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department crews are being assisted by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service to knock down the blaze, according to Annas.

There are currently 135 firefighters from 14 engine companies on scene, according to fire reports.  One helicopter and two air tankers are also assigned.
