FUNERAL COVERAGE: Paying Respects For Police Officer, Iraq War Veteran Jermaine Gibson of Beaumont

The funeral for Cathedral City police Officer Jermaine Gibson, who died one week ago in a crash during a pursuit in Palm Springs, starts at 10 a.m. in Indian Wells. Burial is scheduled at 2:15 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery.

Beaumont police dispatchers, the Sheriff's Department and Cal Fire will help provide public safety coverage today in Cathedral City, so officers and firefighters there can attend funeral services for Cathedral City police Officer Jermaine Gibson.

Gibson, 29, of Beaumont, was killed one week ago today in a pursuit crash in Palm Springs. The two men he was chasing also crashed and they remained hospitalized this week, Palm Springs police said.

Funeral services for Gibson are scheduled at 10 a.m. at Southwest Community Church, 77701 Fred Waring Drive in Indian Wells, Cathedral City police Lt. Charles Robinson said.

The funeral procession will leave Southwest Community Church at about noon, and travel west on Interstate 10 through Banning and Beaumont en route to Riverside National Cemetery, where Gibson will be laid to rest. The burial service is scheduled at 2:15 p.m.

Gibson served two tours in the Iraq War with the U.S. Marine Corps, earned a Purple Heart for being wounded in combat, and was honorably discharged as an infantry squad leader.

He was married in the past year and he was father of a month-old son.

Gibson was "a young man with a distinguished record of service to his country and community," California Gov. Jerry Brown said Saturday. "Every day, officers put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe and Officer Gibson's service and sacrifice will not be forgotten."

Gibson is survived by his wife, Jessica, and month-old son, Jermaine Anthony Gibson Jr., both of Beaumont, his mother, Cheryl Gibson of Vallejo, and his brother, Taurean R. Gibson of Vallejo.
