The 26-year-old was behind bars for the alleged crime, jail reports indicated.

A Banning man was locked up Thursday, accused of attempted murder in the stabbing attack of another local man, police and jail reports indicated.

The stabbing happened Wednesday at around 5:15 p.m., near Hargrave and Lincoln streets, according to Banning Police Lt. Mike West.

Police officers received a call about a man lying in the street, who was found with several stab wounds in his shoulders, neck, chest and abdomen, according to West.

The 36-year-old unidentified victim was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he underwent surgery, West said.  He remained hospitalized as of Thursday afternoon.

West said the victim was not cooperative with police, so details surrounding the attack are limited at this time.  However, there is no indication that the incident was gang related, he said.
