AUTHORITIES: Pit Bull Mauls 76-Year-Old Woman

The dog seriously injured the woman even as bystanders fought the animal off with baseball bats.

An investigation was under way today into the mauling by a pit bull of a 76-year-old woman in San Jacinto, authorities said.

The woman was walking westbound on Commonwealth Avenue near San Jacinto Avenue around 3:25 p.m. Tuesday when a pit bull attacked her, said Sgt. Rose McKinney of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

"Bystanders attempted to help the victim by hitting the dog with baseball bats to get the dog away from her," McKinney said.

The woman suffered several severe puncture wounds. She was taken to a hospital for treatment, while the dog was impounded by animal control officers, McKinney said.

Anyone with information about the attack was urged to call sheriff's investigators at (951) 654-2702.

April, our founding fathers of this country brought those dogs to this country, reasons being, their loyalty, they're excellent ability to hurdle livestock, they're excellent hunters, they make good family pets and most of all their strength and persistence in guarding and protecting its owner and the owners property. Breeding animals to fight isn't limited to dogs, specifically bull terriers. You can say that people having them as family pets has only been a trend of the past 30 to 40 years but you are factually incorrect.
steve March 6, 2013 at 10:54 pm
Where did you get your statistics??? The typical owner of a pitbull that attacks without provocation which you described as lowlifes because they've got extensive criminal histories is probably true and those very same criminals are the problem not the breed of dog. Place the blame where it belongs because the human race has been and continues to breeding the most dangerous, unpredictable monsters than anything else!!!
april ann March 6, 2013 at 11:02 pm
Steve R.....where do you get off being so defensive about pitbulls, their history, the statistics, and religious arrogance. It seems to me that you want to split hairs with anyone who has a different opinion then yours. And, we all know that "opinions" are like assholes....EVERYONE has one! Unless, you are some kind of animal or dog expert, or speak with some kind of credible authority on AMERICAN PITBULLS, you just sound like a overly defensive, pissed off, poster that just wants to argue on a point you have no real personal interest in. You're very arrogant.
april ann March 6, 2013 at 11:03 pm
Agreed.
steve March 6, 2013 at 11:58 pm
I am somewhat educated concerning Bull Terriers and I've said nothing about pitbulls that is false. The hair splitting, disagreeing asshole comment is exactly why I respond. The religious arrogance is on you though honey with your hypocrisy, claiming to be Christian and making statements like your last one!! I don't claim to be religious I choose to deal with reality and the real truth, not some preachers interpretation of what "you people" call "biblical truths". Have you bothered to research anything to dispute anything I've said regarding pitbulls?? Take 5 and read Wikipedias definition of pitbulls and their origins if you want have any credibility or do you just choose to be factually ignorant?? My interest in this goes back to the first comment and had you bothered to read them you'd be informed instead of opinionated!!!
steve March 7, 2013 at 12:13 am
You are partially correct about the asshole thing though. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and most stink!!! I just got out of the shower so I know mine smells so fresh and clean clean!!! This is the second time you and a few others here have clashed and it certainly won't be the last.
Do try to implement those Christian values and morals and refrain from calling people you disagree with "assholes". Its not very lady like, certainly not Jesus like and it makes you look like one yourself!!! Toodle Doo Lady!!!
steve March 7, 2013 at 12:27 am
Its called informative not defensive or opinionated because its factually correct!!!
steve March 7, 2013 at 12:32 am
Arrogance vs Ignorance??? Hmmm??? I accept your opinionated description of arrogance even though it stinks!!!
beaumontdave March 7, 2013 at 02:03 am
Many Insurance companies list four breeds that that they won't issue a policy over. If these types of attacks persist, insurers may make it too expensive to own some breeds. Cities could make special licensing requirements and demand fence and gate security measures like they do with pools. My sons pit is a sweetheart and well secured, but even with that the digging and chewing are non-stop, so I'm comfortable in stating that this is a demanding breed and too many people aren't up to the level of care required. In the end, society may have to make owning aggressive breeds too expensive for all but the most committed dog owners.
Carla March 7, 2013 at 02:07 am
pit bulls are loaded guns that too often go off . the problem is when you put a loaded gun in the wrong hands bad things happen. even in more responsible hands accidents happen. how many people have to be victimized by these un predictable animals before we do away with them.they trully have no redeaming value.
Carla March 7, 2013 at 02:43 am
What good to Pits do? I would bet all the good that Pit Bulls have done doesn't out weigh the grief caused from the death of just one of their victims. Pit Bulls have no redeaming value and have been bred for fighting, not loving. So I think I speak for many people when I say "I wouldn't miss them". But don't worry if the breed is wiped off the face of the earth, their owners can still get rattle snakes, mountain lions, or other animals that are misunderstood.
steve March 7, 2013 at 03:10 am
You're wasting your time trying to reason with these idiots!!
steve March 7, 2013 at 03:17 am
No Carla, they can't. You may think you speak for many, who knows maybe you do, but you don't speak for the majority of citizens.
steve March 7, 2013 at 03:26 am
Another opinion based on paranoia!!! Surely you know there's a difference between opinions and statistics!!! Ughh
steve March 7, 2013 at 03:34 am
Careful with your comparisons of guns with dogs because your giving credibility to the activists pushing gun control legislation.
Watever March 7, 2013 at 03:56 am
Hopefully the lady makes a full recovery an as too the man that stepped in and saved her good job
ATC March 7, 2013 at 11:43 am
Yup, they do indeed serve a purpose...violence and intimidation.
ATC March 7, 2013 at 11:46 am
Yeah, except that "statistics" in this case means actual human beings killed or maimed by animals that "were so friendly and sweet..."
Just google "family pitbull attacks". Every one of those victims IS NOT an opinion.
ATC March 7, 2013 at 12:36 pm
Those of you who continue to ignore the fact that Pitbulls are by far THE most dangerous breed in the US are idiots. Do some damn research, for a change. Here's a start for you:
http://www.dogsbite.org/dog-bite-statistics-fatalities-2012.php -38 U.S. fatal dog attacks occurred in 2012. -Despite being regulated in Military Housing and over 600 U.S. cities, pit bulls contributed to 61% (23) of these deaths, even though Pit bulls make up less than 5% of the total U.S. dog population. -Together, pit bulls (23 deaths in 2012) and rottweilers (3 deaths in 2012), the second most lethal dog breed, accounted for 68% of all fatal attacks in 2012. -From 2005 to 2012, this combination (pits/rots) accounted for 73% (183) of the total recorded deaths (251). -During this 8-year period, pit bulls killed 151 Americans (60% of the deaths), about one citizen every 19 days, versus rottweilers, which killed 32 (13%), about one every 91 days. Every one of these "statistics" is a human being that is no longer alive; mothers, fathers, children... Do you really understand that? This is not a video game that can be "reset", they are DEAD. Another one EVERY 19 DAYS! The only reason to own a Pitbull is to project an image of power and violence. And all too often, innocent people pay the ultimate price for that "image". So yes, my opinion that pitbull owners are either brain-dead or low-lifes stands, and the more research I do, the more that opinion is strenghthened.
ATC March 7, 2013 at 12:49 pm
This is what should really stand out and can't be disputed:
Pit bulls make up less than 5% of the US dog population, yet are responsible for over 60% of the fatal dog attacks, consistently, year after year, for 8 years running. You can try to claim that "it's the owners" all you want, but those numbers either contradict that claim, or prove my "lowlife" claim; take your pick.
Renee March 7, 2013 at 04:30 pm
Hmm. ATC, saying you believe in God and saying Pitbulls are a "mistake of nature" seem to be contradictory. God does not make mistakes.
I am also interested to see if you also believe this strongly about guns. Seeing as you state many statistics about deaths or injuries caused by Pits, do you also oppose guns because of the tremendous injuries and deaths associated with them?
ATC March 7, 2013 at 05:51 pm
From Wikipedia:
"Several studies have determined that pit bull owners and owners of other "vicious" or "high risk" breeds (most commonly identified as Akita, Chow Chow, Doberman Pinscher, Pit Bull, Rottweiler, and Wolf-mix) are more likely to have criminal convictions and are more likely to display antisocial behaviors. A 2006 study comparing owners of "high risk" dogs to owners of "low risk" dogs. "High risk" dogs included “vicious” dogs by breed (e.g., Pit Bulls) or “vicious” actions (e.g., any dog that had bitten, attacked or killed a person or other animal). The study determined that "high risk" dog owners had nearly 10 times as many criminal convictions then those of "low risk" dog owners.[46] A 2009[47] and a followup 2012[48] study generally supported these conclusions."
ATC March 7, 2013 at 05:57 pm
Nice try, Renee. Man has bred pitbulls to be aggressive, fighting animals, not God, and the generations of that intentional breeding can't be ignored. It is also man's decision to claim them as pets, not God's. Many of God's animals are aggresive, powerful, and vicious. No mistake, UNLESS you try to make them out to be a domestic "pet". So I guess you are right, pitbulls are not "mistakes', but man's desire to have them as pets certainly is.
As for guns...please stick to the subject at hand. Let me know when ANY gun gets out of it's yard/home/safe on it's own and attacks a man/woman/child unprovoked on it's own. Then we'll talk. Guns are inanimate objects that are 100% predictable, and do absolutely NOTHING without a person pulling the trigger. There is no one pulling the trigger of these powerful, unpredictable animals. In fact, the argument could be made that we should ALL be armed, in order to protect ourselves from the vicious animals that these lowlifes insist on bringing into our communities.
concerned citizen March 8, 2013 at 04:16 am
ATC, you cannot agrue with these nut jobs. If their kid will being killed by their monster pit, they would still be defending these monster dogs. Again, a couple of days ago, in another state, a babysitter's OWN 2 pits turned on her and the toddler she was watching. The baby was killed. I have 3 friends who raised these monsters correctly and they all turned. It makes me sick when I hear about innocent people being injured or killed by these monsters. But, it does make me happy when I hear about the monsters turning on their own family. Better their family than mine. After all, they chose to have the monsters. I have almost been killed by these monsters twice.

Steverino...i never claimed to be a christian, and youre just full of hot air...:)
linda hanna March 8, 2013 at 12:07 pm
ATC...didn't read all your posts, but if you general drift is that these horrid dogs bred to attack and kill should be illegal based on their vile history, I agree with you 100%. Guns don't kill people, people do. So do Pit Bulls.
jen c March 8, 2013 at 08:29 pm
I have 3 pitbulls and there friendly I agree just like if u raise ur child right he/she would make wise decisions same as a dog of any breed. I love pitbulls. :) they even listen to my 3yr old daughter
jen c March 8, 2013 at 08:32 pm
I have. 3 pitbulls who have never been raised to fight and are very obedient. They even listen
to my 3 yr old. I believe its how their raised. If u raise them to fight that's exactly what they will do. Just like a kid if u raise them to be bad that's what ur going to get.. just my opinion
ATC March 9, 2013 at 02:09 am
And your opinion is putting your daughter's very life at risk. Sad that you would gamble that, jen, in light of the odds that are well documented.
Ike March 19, 2013 at 02:18 am
Jen, there are about 30 deaths a year in the USA from pitbull maulings, and hundreds of serious injuries. There are about twice as many pitbull attacks that result in death or serious injury as there are similar attacks by all other breeds of dogs combined. And many of those cases ended with the family saying the dog had never been aggressive before. Yeah, there are about a million pitbulls in the US, and maybe a few hundred attacks out of a million doesn't seem high, but people play the lottery every week on much worse odds and think they are going to win.

I find it interesting the RG was all over the State of the City luncheon but not interested inRead More printing the questions and issues raised by the Mayor's unsubstantiated claims. We should stop paying any attention to the RG if they aren't interested in what's really happening in Beaumont. I don't subscribe to the RG but it is still delivered to my house every week. Does anyone know how to stop the delivery? I could just pick it up each week and throw it in the trash but then their circulation won't be accurately represented to their advertisers. I'm going to start asking local business to stop advertising in the RG.
Ken June 17, 2013 at 11:47 am
Great idea Lloyd..They dont deliver to the old neighborhoods I guess. I generally pay the 50 centsRead More to see what they DIDNT print.
Ben June 16, 2013 at 06:26 pm
Maybe you could help the feed store itself find some low cost spay clinics for the cats they alwaysRead More have. They go through cats every week it seems. One just had kittens, and now someone just gave them another, who if not spayed now will probably have kittens, too. They have cages full of kittens all the time. Someone in this area needs to do spays cheap for these people who can't seem to get their acts together.

Niki- yes the plans have been updated to allow Banning and Yucaipa to share in the use of the newRead More ponds. It is an inter-agency plan that is beneficial to everyone. Why you consider having other entities share this project, which bonds us all together: they are paying to help build the new area so we, as ratepayers aren't hit with the whole bill, and we are going to finally get some recycled water into use from Yucaipa, Banning gets new wells, and no matter what- we have ultimate control over the use at all times- how that is a horror story I can't figure out. These plans were in the works for years, it was no secret. Its now being finalized by the board- as the details are now ironed out. The only horror story I see happening is how Beaumont refuses to make an agreement with the district to utilize their recycled water- and its not all the water district's fault like you think. Beaumont can't build unless they find some new sources of water. One of the reasons they pulled out is once they update their wastewater facility- they don't plan on wasting that recycled water just on landscaping . They are going to dump it into the basin itself for the water credit. Beaumont residents have no clue that their drinking water will eventually be more wastewater than water coming down the mountain. Sorry- but I think Fraser is doing a great job. If he hadn't got in there, the district would belong to Beaumont, who would take all the water they want regardless of impact studies, and siphon off all the money for their own uses. Guess you missed their lawsuit in the courts- the courts laughed them out. Beaumont is broke. The water district is financially sound.
Niki Magee June 13, 2013 at 01:54 pm
Ben, it is unfortunate you are the victim of such serious misinformation. I thought I knew everyoneRead More at last night's BCVWD meeting. Who were you?
Claire Frémont June 15, 2013 at 09:59 am
I'm curious, Niki, what misinformation are you speaking of concerning Ben's comment? He appears toRead More be stating information that I've read about also. Beaumont did sue to try and take over the water district, they did get a cease and desist order to stop dumping their wastewater into the aquifer, and have pulled out of all negotiations with the district to supply them with recycled water. The district has made the arrangements instead with Yucaipa to take their water, with the hopes that someday Beaumont will come around. All these things are in agendas and downloads available to the public, which part are you disputing?
