Banning Resident

Leonard Purvis was an excellent Chief of Police. He was probably the most visible, approachable and well liked Chief in the State of California! I think that you folks that are spending an inordinate amount of time 'trash talking' over this should donate your time to Carol's kitchen, the Senior Center or some other worthwhile cause. Thank you!!

Peter - I agree with you 100%. There is a clique of haters here on the Patch that somehow believes the way to make themselves noticed is to trash-talk others. And as you noted, these people don't do much for their community except run others down. Chief Purvis donated much of his time to helping others, and this makes these do-nothing trash-talking people seem little in comparison so they have to find a way to tear him down. You'll notice that outside of ATC none of them give specifics of any way he personally mistreated any of them - and ATC's gripe is a personal one where he felt Purvis should have acted and didn't. I wasn't there so it isn't my story to tell. In my experience Chief Purvis is one of the most principled and ethical people I know and I am proud to call him friend. **** Jeremiah

I agree with both Peter & Jeremiah. Having visual and approachable Police is really important to young people. By having an approachable and involved Chief shows children that the police are not the bad guys. There is more than basic police work involved in creating good community relations. However, even a Chief has his limits and could become impatient and critical when an adult acts like a 5 yr old. Banning has lost an outstanding Police Chief and I'm leery about his possible replacement.
