Beaumont Man, Father of 3, Identified as Police Officer Killed in Corona Crash

"It's a sad day for the San Bernardino Police Department. It's a sad day for our family," police Chief Jarrod Burguan said. "Shaun was a well- respected officer. He was much beloved by his co-workers, and just a generally all-around good guy."

An off-duty police officer who died Thursday in a motorcycle crash on the Riverside (91) Freeway during which he was vaulted into oncoming traffic, has been identified as a Beaumont man, who leaves behind a wife and three children.

San Bernardino police Officer Shaun Jarvis, 30, was killed about 9 a.m. on the westbound 91, just east of Grand Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

"It's a sad day for the San Bernardino Police Department. It's a sad day for our family," police Chief Jarrod Burguan said. "Shaun was a well- respected officer. He was much beloved by his co-workers, and just a generally all-around good guy."

The father of three, who lived in Beaumont, was traveling in the carpool lane when a motorist in an adjacent lane apparently swerved into his lane, causing him to lose control and plow into a guardrail, where he was ejected from his bike and flung over the center divider -- directly into eastbound traffic, according to Burguan.

Jarvis was struck by a car and died at the scene.

"Shaun grew up locally, and it was his life-long dream to be a police officer," the chief said. "This month was his eight-year anniversary with the department. He had come to us as a rookie police officer ... He spent his entire career with us."

Burguan said grief counselors were being made available to Jarvis's coworkers and staff were reaching out to his family.

The freeway was partially shut down for several hours while the CHP conducted an investigation.
