Blog: When Will The Santa Ana Winds End?

Large fires are breaking out across Southern California today and the question on everyone's mind is when these winds will weaken

Large fires are breaking out across Southern California today and the question on everyone's mind is when these winds will weaken.

The Santa Ana Winds should weaken this evening into the overnight hours as surface gradients relax.  They were caused by a passing frontal zone over the Rocky Mountains, which brought the offshore flow into the area.

Their dry nature is because they sink from the High Desert and Mountain Regions, with each 1,000 foot drop they sink/heat up the low levels when they enter the area.

So hang tight, this will end soon.  It is worth the note that I issued your area a Santa Ana Wind Advisory, attached Fire Weather Warning several days before the event.

After this, we cool-down with a chance of precipitation into the weekend with an upper low (cutoff low) dropping out of Canada to just offshore San Francisco.
