Calling All Parents

The Redlands Tea Party Patriots are trying to protect your children by circulating a petition to stop a new law mandating the positive teaching of alternative sexual lifestyles in our schools.

For a while in Afghanistan last year, I couldn’t tell whether I was angrier at the Taliban for shooting rockets at us or Sacramento for forcing students to study alternative sexual lifestyles in positive terms.

Then, as a parent of a 6-year-old boy, I was absolutely livid at the California legislature and Gov. Jerry Brown for passing SB 48, a law that is a blatant and shameless government overreach into our lives.

Read it for yourself:  http://www.stopsb48.com/

I tried to download a petition and send it back to California, but, as I learned later, my petition was invalid because I used the wrong size of paper.  Worse still, the Stop SB 48 people fell just 5,000 signatures short of qualifying for the November ballot.

But the Stop SB 48 people are trying again with an initiative known as the CLASS Act, or “Children Learning Accurate Social Science.” Whatever the name, the cause is just.

Now that I’m back in California, I’m proud that my Redlands Tea Party Patriots have taken on the law’s repeal as a cause. The new law clearly violates our principle of constitutionally limited government.

I was thrilled last week when I came home from work and found a huge box of petitions from Stop SB 48 people. I’m in the process of distributing them to like-minded people and gathering signatures.

The public can sign them at our next Market Night booth in Redlands on Thursday, March 15. They will be part of our ongoing neighborhood canvassing campaign.

Further, a local church, the Redlands Christian Center, 814 Church Street in Redlands, has courageously agreed to be a petition center: http://classact2012.com/petition-centers/

It’s time for good parents to stop fearing political correctness and unite in a cause as important as any parent could ever have: protecting children.

From FAQs about SB 48:
The bill added language to Education Code Section 51204.5, which prescribes the inclusion of the contributions of various groups in the history of California and the United States. This section already included men and women and numerous ethnic groups; the expanded language now includes (additions bolded): “...a study of the role and contributions of both men and women, Native Americans, African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, European Americans, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans, persons with disabilities, and members of other ethnic and cultural groups, to the economic, political, and social development of California and the United States of America, with particular emphasis on portraying the role of these groups in contemporary society.” http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/cr/cf/senatebill48faq.asp

i think the real question here is, how often does charlie use just for men or some similar product? that beard doesnt appear to have a bit of gray and that just seems impossible for a man who worries about such trivial matters. so my guess is once every seven days.
Mr C March 12, 2012 at 10:43 am
Perhaps Gene and Steve could explain exactly why they think it's important to know whether a man has sex with another man or not in the context of their accomplishments? I've spent my entire life not caring...until it started to be shoved down my throat. I resent being told I MUST embrace this lifestyle and find it real close to the gag factor teaching elementary school children about sexual orientation.

Here are some facts that the fools fails to mention in all their prejudice and fear-mongering:
1. Lessons required under the FAIR Education Act must be age-appropriate and will be developed at the local level, where school districts will decide what’s appropriate for each classroom based on parent and teacher input. 2. Discrimination doesn't belong in the classroom. The FAIR Education Act prevents schools from adopting learning materials with a discriminatory bias or negative stereotypes based solely on race, ethnicity, religion, disability and sexual orientation that can alienate students and foster an environment where bullying thrives. Preventing discrimination and teaching about historical movements and the contributions of people from all backgrounds, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, disability or sexual orientation fosters an atmosphere of dignity and respect that makes schools safer for all students. 3.The FAIR Education Act adds no additional costs to the state. Periodically, the State Board of Education updates its education standards and textbooks. The next update is set for 2015 and any changes related to the FAIR Education Act will be made as a part of that regularly scheduled update. (http://www.faireducationaction.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/FAIR-Fact-Sheet-Revised-11.171.pdf). In this day and age of access to reputable sources of information, you'd think the fools would educate themselves before opening their mouths and removing all doubt.

Boils down to the fact that there are quite a few people with lifestyles that are different here in California, and the State Board of Education adopted a non-discriminatory policy over a decade ago. In this country all people are equal, just not the ones who look and act like you. Far from being told you must embrace that kind of lifestyle, it is simply trying to teach that these people are out there and do exist. Or are we supposed to turn our heads and just whisper behind a gay or lesbians back, and pat our kid on the back if he comes home and says he picked on someone who looked "gay" at school that day? Why do some of you gentlemen always picture the sex act instead of the person?
steve l March 12, 2012 at 04:28 pm
In the end it boils down to bullying Mac. It's to get kids to understand others are different and accept them for who they are. And be careful what gets crammed down your throat, just sayin
Mr C March 12, 2012 at 05:08 pm
When I graduated high school in 1975 I don't recall any gays or lesbians being bullied or beat up. About the worst thing that happened was to be ostracized possibly. It seems to me the G&L community has possibly been their own worst enemy. The more militant and demanding they become the more violence and hatred they receive.

When I learned about Mary Todd Lincoln in school, no one saw it as the teachers shoving Abe's heterosexuality down my throat. The mention of someone's sexuality is built into regular, everyday language during the course of a day and should not be edited out at all. Period. This bill will just ensure that the facts of a relevant human being, gay or straight, aren't edited out just because there are some people in our society who are still in the dark ages when it comes to basic human equality, recognition and lack of judgement of others.
If, for instance, students were learning about Oscar Wilde the famous Irish writer and poet they should know his true history which was greatly defined by his homosexuality. His relationships informed his works and he was imprisoned for two years for his sexual orientation. This is a great writer whose works are considered classics and the truth of his life is that he was a homosexual and we should not hide that fact anymore than we do not hide the fact that Mark Twain had a wife and children or that Madame Curie had an affair with a married student of hers. These are their histories and your discomfort with the details should not dictate whether or not our children are taught the truth. Period.
Clavell Jackson March 12, 2012 at 09:03 pm
This is a clear case of people on the right not letting the facts get in the way of a good story. The new law is supposed to expand the curriculum to include the contributions of people of different races, genders and orientations, something people on the left have been advocating for years. I remember taking American history in college and the only thing I learned about black people was slavery and MLK. (I would say 95 percent of the things I have learned about Black history was outside the classroom.) Of course that doesn't get people as riled up as telling them the schools are going to force your kids to learn about gay sex, which is not true.
Larrisa R March 12, 2012 at 10:00 pm
Then you are lucky, Mr. Cathey, for it did happen at my school. Know what else always happened- straight guys hitting on girls constantly, saying we must be lesbians if we didn't want what they were always trying to sell us. Gay guys were the only ones you could count on not to try and feel you up all the time. And I have never heard of a gay or lesbian person raping anyone, while straight guys seem to account for all the rapists and pedophiles in America. So the Tea Party people are not worried about what famine, war, or genocide might do to their kids, they worry that their kids might get taught that someone who is gay might actually have cured cancer or created a clean energy source? You are making it sound as if you think that if a G or L 's accomplishment gets mentioned in school the teacher is going to be holding up pictures of those sex acts for visual effects. Talk about minds in the gutter. Good luck with that anti-gay petition signing to the man with the phallic symbol in his mouth. How ironic can you get.
John F. Berry March 13, 2012 at 12:38 am
This is one of the best strings I have ever read in my year as a blogger for The Patch (even Clavell is throwing in something worth reading v his typical baseless and brainless epithets). I'm not really a social conservative. I really don't care what people do in their bedrooms as long as it doesn't involve children. What I resent is when the gay/lesbian/whatever community tries to impose their sexual habits on others, as what is exactly happening with this new law. The gay community used to be about wanting to be left alone. I am all for that. But now they've become the bullies they used to complain about. It's time to get this measure on the ballot and vote. Our first public appearence of the petition will be at our Market Night booth in Redlands on Thursday. C'mon out and sign and let's get it on the ballot!
Tempest March 13, 2012 at 02:36 am
Now they've become the bullies? As compared to all the years of being picked on by the bullies? Is turnabout is fair play anything your parents had the decency to teach you apply here? I see no straight children being bullied into suicide by the gay children. I only see the picked on standing up and finally getting the courage to take on the real bullies who refuse to see or hear any other language than what they themselves speak. You impose your sexual standards on everyone, everyone must be white, heterosexual, and Christian, and you now rail against being treated as a minority? How about you take a turn at wanting to be left alone, try not to get picked on, fail, and bring that feedback back to the blacks, Jews, gays, etc, on how it feels to live as an outcast in the same country that supposedly gives equal rights to everyone?
Clavell Jackson March 13, 2012 at 01:02 pm
Mr. Berry, you again surprise me your hilarity :) I salute you. Go back and read my columns, most of them are based on facts and sourced with information from reliable sources to buttress the points. It's your columns that are filled with half truths (like this one.) As I have said before, you and Mr. Ferrell are projecting.

its a phallic symbol. when are you going to update your photo?

I find it interesting the RG was all over the State of the City luncheon but not interested inRead More printing the questions and issues raised by the Mayor's unsubstantiated claims. We should stop paying any attention to the RG if they aren't interested in what's really happening in Beaumont. I don't subscribe to the RG but it is still delivered to my house every week. Does anyone know how to stop the delivery? I could just pick it up each week and throw it in the trash but then their circulation won't be accurately represented to their advertisers. I'm going to start asking local business to stop advertising in the RG.

Great idea Lloyd..They dont deliver to the old neighborhoods I guess. I generally pay the 50 centsRead More to see what they DIDNT print.

UPDATE on CV (nickname)...a tumor protruding from his right eye was removed yesterday - he now canRead More close the eye completely which, coupled with a fly mask, will keep the flies from laying eggs in his eye (a very nasty thing indeed). He has settled in with a gentle geriatric horse for a companion and is eating well (his weight was not an issue before - he obviously was fed decently). His club hoof causes him quite a lot of discomfort, but he manages to hobble around. A visit from the farrier is nextin line, to see if his discomfort can be aleviated. I don't believe he will ever be a riding horse, but he casts a nice shadow and is gentle and kind to be around. There is a peacefulness that eminates from his very being...

Niki- yes the plans have been updated to allow Banning and Yucaipa to share in the use of the newRead More ponds. It is an inter-agency plan that is beneficial to everyone. Why you consider having other entities share this project, which bonds us all together: they are paying to help build the new area so we, as ratepayers aren't hit with the whole bill, and we are going to finally get some recycled water into use from Yucaipa, Banning gets new wells, and no matter what- we have ultimate control over the use at all times- how that is a horror story I can't figure out. These plans were in the works for years, it was no secret. Its now being finalized by the board- as the details are now ironed out. The only horror story I see happening is how Beaumont refuses to make an agreement with the district to utilize their recycled water- and its not all the water district's fault like you think. Beaumont can't build unless they find some new sources of water. One of the reasons they pulled out is once they update their wastewater facility- they don't plan on wasting that recycled water just on landscaping . They are going to dump it into the basin itself for the water credit. Beaumont residents have no clue that their drinking water will eventually be more wastewater than water coming down the mountain. Sorry- but I think Fraser is doing a great job. If he hadn't got in there, the district would belong to Beaumont, who would take all the water they want regardless of impact studies, and siphon off all the money for their own uses. Guess you missed their lawsuit in the courts- the courts laughed them out. Beaumont is broke. The water district is financially sound.

Ben, it is unfortunate you are the victim of such serious misinformation. I thought I knew everyoneRead More at last night's BCVWD meeting. Who were you?
Claire Frémont June 15, 2013 at 09:59 am
I'm curious, Niki, what misinformation are you speaking of concerning Ben's comment? He appears toRead More be stating information that I've read about also. Beaumont did sue to try and take over the water district, they did get a cease and desist order to stop dumping their wastewater into the aquifer, and have pulled out of all negotiations with the district to supply them with recycled water. The district has made the arrangements instead with Yucaipa to take their water, with the hopes that someday Beaumont will come around. All these things are in agendas and downloads available to the public, which part are you disputing?
