Officer Delivers Own Baby Boy While on Duty

"We are a family-oriented department," Chief says. "But this is taking it a little too far."

A Hemet police officer is the proud father Monday of a baby boy delivered by none other than the officer himself after his wife went into labor while the lawman was on duty.

"I wasn't worried, it just happened so fast and the cord was around his neck so I pulled it around his head," said Officer Bryan Anderson of the weekend birth of his son, Michael Joseph Anderson.

According to the patrolman, his wife Holly called him on his mobile phone at around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday, saying that she was in labor and needed him home immediately. Anderson said he arrived moments later to find Holly about to give birth, at which point he radioed for medical assistance and assumed the role of midwife.

"Officer Anderson called in for medical assistance but prior to it arriving, he delivered a healthy baby boy in the bathroom of his home at 3:53 a.m.," Deputy Chief Rob Webb said in a statement about the birth.

Michael Anderson weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces and was about 18 inches in length. The tot, named for his great-grandfather, was taken with his mom to Hemet Valley Medical Center, where both are fine, according to police Chief Dave Brown.

"We are a family-oriented department, but this is taking it a little too far," Brown said. "We are really proud of Bryan -- even though I'm certain Holly did all the work."

Brown said he had been around long enough to remember Officer Anderson's birth and all the excitement the patrolman's father, now-retired Sgt. Jim Anderson, experienced.

"But at least Bryan's dad had the good sense to take his mom to the hospital!" the chief joked.
