County Joins Campaign to Support Troops Overseas by Sending Care Packages, Treats

The county's Office of Military & Defense Services has joined the Move America Forward campaign, a nonprofit effort that seeks to reinforce home-front support for men and women on the front lines overseas.

With America's birthday fast approaching, troops overseas need a reminder that people at home are thinking about them, and sending a care package can be a "great way" to do that, Riverside County's military affairs commissioner said this week.

"As someone who received care packages from back home, I can personally testify to their value as a morale booster," Commissioner Tom Freeman said. "The cards and letters inside expressing thanks for your service and telling you that you're not forgotten while you are serving your country can bring a tear to your eye."

The campaign, now in its 10th year, provides care packages to units in Afghanistan and the Middle East. The packages are filled with snacks, sunscreen, sanitation items and other basic comforts often taken for granted by people stateside. Pocket-sized versions of the U.S. Constitution, calendars and notes of thanks are also included.

"Supporting our troops by sending a care package is a great way to boost the morale of men and women serving in a combat zone," Freeman said. "Our troops need to know that their sacrifices are not forgotten and that we appreciate their service to the nation."

Packages for one to two troops can be purchased for $25, while battalion- sized packages are available for $999. There are also special packages for "wounded warriors."

"Let's remember that while we're here safe at home, our guard, reserve and active-duty personnel in the Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy and Marines are in harm's way," Freeman said. "The Riverside County Board of Supervisors and our county executive officer encourage you to thank our military, and one way to say thanks is with a care package."
