TRAFFIC ALERT: Emergency Closure on I-10, All Westbound Lanes Shut

A bridge was hit in Fontana by a truck Thursday, and now a steel beam inside it needs to be replaced, Caltrans announced.

Motorists were warned of a full freeway closure planned for Friday, April 5, into early Saturday on Interstate 10 in Fontana.

The emergency closure was scheduled from midnight until 4 a.m. Saturday "to safely replace a steel beam that was hit on April 4 by a truck transporting heavy equipment," the San Bernardino Associated Governments said in a traffic advisory sent out Friday.

The beam was hit at the Citrus Ave. interchange, but the closure spanned between Sierra Avenue and Cherry Avenue in Fontana, according to officials.

"The full closure of the westbound lanes are necessary for the safety of both the construction crews and the motoring public," the alert stated.  "Traffic will be detoured off the freeway at Sierra Avenue and use Valley Boulevard to continue west to Cherry Avenue to reconnect with westbound Interstate 10."

According to SANBAG, the collision led to a three hour long closure of westbound I-10 at around 4:30 p.m.

"Construction of the new Citrus Avenue Interchange is expected to resume on schedule following tonight’s emergency closure," the agency said.

More closures are expected next week, but only at the on and off ramps.

Construction of the new interchange began in April 2012 and is expected to continue through the end of 2014. More information about the project can be found on the SANBAG website at www.sanbag.ca.gov
