Storm to Continue Overnight, Motorists Warned to Keep Off Mountain Roads

"Heavy snow showers in the strongest cells will reduce visibilities to near zero at times," the Weather Service warned in a an urgent winter weather message just before 10 p.m. Friday.

The storm moving through the San Gorgonio Pass overnight was expected to continue with scattered showers and the chance of isolated thunderstorms, as well as more snow at higher elevations in the mountains.

The National Weather Service warned motorists to avoid mountain roads until Saturday morning.

Several inches of additional snow combined with limited visibility were expected to make traveling in the mountains hazardous, according to the Weather Service.

Periods of moderate to heavy snow were forecast overnight above 4,000 feet.

"Heavy snow showers in the strongest cells will reduce visibilities to near zero at times," the Weather Service warned in a an urgent winter weather message just before 10 p.m. Friday. "Many mountain roads will become snow covered and slippery. Travel is not recommended in the mountains tonight through Saturday morning."
