Wednesday Update:

California Highway Patrol reports indicated Wednesday that all lanes of the 60 freeway weren't back open until 9 a.m.

CHP officials were able to provide Patch with some more details on the collision that led to a massive backup through the Badlands into Beaumont.

"The right-most outside tire on the number three axle blew out," Officer Ed Mendez told Patch Wednesday.  "The driver lost control of the vehicle... and flipped."

Despite the major damage to the vehicle after it flipped, the driver was not injured, Mendez said.

Tuesday Update, 10:50 p.m.:
One lane of westbound 60 remains closed at this time.

California Highway Patrol officials tell Banning-Beaumont Patch that efforts to upright an overturned big rig and clean up the roadway have taken longer than originally anticipated.

At this point, officials say the number two lane will remain closed for an "unknown duration" of time.

Update 8:20 p.m.
Westbound traffic on State Route 60 remains backed up all the way through the Badlands, from Moreno Valley to Beaumont, and a Caltrans spokeswoman tells Banning-Beaumont Patch that one lane will remain closed until around 10 p.m.

Caltrans District 8 Spokeswoman Terri Kasinga says the number two, or right, westbound lane will remain closed until approximately 9:45 p.m. while crews finish clearing the scene of an overturned big rig crash.

She also tells Patch that the driver of that big rig did not suffer any major injuries, and was expected to be alright.

CHP logs indicate that westbound traffic on the 60 is stalled for approximately eight miles at this time, from Gilman Springs Road to the Dowling Orchard fruit stand.

Update 6:56 p.m.
One lane of the westbound 60 remained closed in the Badlands as of 6:55 p.m. Tuesday due to a big rig crash east of Gilman Springs Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported on the westbound 60 east of Gilman Springs at 5:32 p.m. May 21, according to Cal Fire and the CHP.

Update 6:41 p.m.
Caltrans was expected to close westbound State Route 60 temporarily Tuesday evening at Interstate 10 in Beaumont due to an overturned big rig on the 60 in the Badlands, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Both westbound lanes of the 60 were closed at the crash scene east of Gilman Springs Road as of 6:30 p.m. One westbound lane was reported open by 6:41 p.m., according to the CHP.

Caltrans was called out to close the westbound 60 at Interstate 10 at 6:20 p.m. By 6:25 p.m. the westbound 60 was backed up to Jackrabbit Trail, according to the CHP.

Posted 6:21 p.m.
A big rig overturned Tuesday afternoon on State Route 60 in the Badlands and a Sig Alert was issued for the westbound lanes of the narrow, winding freeway.

The crash was reported on the westbound 60 east of Gilman Springs Road at 5:32 p.m. May 21, according to Cal Fire and the California Highway Patrol.

A dozen firefighters responded and advised motorists should expect delays, according to Cal Fire. The fire crews cleared at 6:13 p.m., according to the CHP.

A CHP dispatcher said in a phone interview a Sig Alert was in effect but she was not sure if the lanes were blocked or closed.

The big rig was reported on its side, and both lanes were reported blocked at one point. No problems were reported on the eastbound 60 to Beaumont, Banning and Interstate 10.
