Oil Spill Shuts Down I-10 at Banning Scales

Caltrans says they were on scene Thursday night mopping up the mess.

Update 10:29 p.m: Caltrans officials say the mess has been cleared, and all lanes are back open.

Two of the four eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near the Banning truck scales were closed to traffic Thursday night after a "truck oil spill," Caltrans reported.

According to Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol, the numbers three and four— or two rightmost— lanes were closed to traffic around 7:15 p.m.

CHP Spokesman Darren Meyer tells Banning-Beaumont Patch that a stretch of about 50 yards of roadway was covered in a fluid that was dropped by an unidentified vehicle.

It happened just west of the Desert Hills Inspection Facility, near the Cabazon outlets, Meyer explained.

Caltrans Spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said it should take crews until around 9:45 p.m. to clean up the mess.
