Fire Scorches 20 Acres in Whitewater

The fire was reported at 2:31 p.m. Saturday south of the Whitewater Preserve, and it was contained at about 20 acres by 7 p.m., according to Cal Fire.

Fire burned about 20 acres of grass Saturday in Whitewater, south of the Whitewater Preserve area, according to Cal Fire.

The fire was reported at 2:31 p.m. and the first crews on scene estimated the blaze at 5 acres with the potential to burn 500 acres, Cheri Patterson of Cal Fire-Riverside County said.

More than 100 firefighters responded, along with a water-dropping helicopter and two tanker planes, Patterson said.

The fire was declared contained at 20 acres at 7 p.m., Patterson said.

No injuries or property damage were reported. The cause of the fire was being investigated.

The Whitewater Preserve is maintained by the Wildland Conservancy.
