Cal Fire Seeks Suspect in Illegal Shooting that Sparked Fire West of Beaumont

Cal Fire officials Tuesday were seeking a suspect or suspects believed responsible for illegal shooting that sparked a fire in the south San Timoteo Canyon area west of Beaumont on Saturday.

The fire north of Reche Canyon Road on May 25 scorched more than 100 acres and initially threatened a home with people inside, according to Cal Fire-Riverside County.

Chief John R. Hawkins of Cal Fire-Riverside County reminded people of increased fire danger this year.

"With below-average rainfall this season and last season paired with above normal temperatures, the vegetation has had an early start in drying out and increasing the threat of wildland fires," Hawkins said in a statement distributed May 28.

"There are many, many recreational activities that we have available to us here and I ask that all residents and visitors practice extreme caution . . .  Everyone must do their part in preventing wildland fires."

Hawkins urged anyone with info about the fire start on Saturday to contact investigators:

  • Recreational shooting causes fires. The 124-acre fire Saturday in Reche Canyon, north of Moreno Valley was determined by Cal Fire investigators to have been started by illegal shooting. Tipsters can call the Arson/Tip Hotline at 800-633-2836 to report information about shooters in the area on May 25, 2013.
Hawkins also reminded residents and visitors:
  • Proper and safe use of motorized equipment during fire season can prevent fires. Clearing dry brush or motorcycle riding can spark a fast-moving wildland fire, threatening lives and property.
  • Fireworks are illegal in Riverside County. They can cause injuries and start fires.
