My wife and I were reading a Bible verse the other day (something we do every day) and a phrase caught my eye big time. I forget the chapter and verse, but it was a warning about letting servants rule our lives. I thought that is the danger we have by putting our elected officials into a cult status. We need to keep in mind that the "servants" in this case are our elected representatives and all government workers. Those folks work for US, THE PEOPLE. They take our tax and fee dollars and live off those dollars. They work for us, folks. They need not to run our lives, but need to make things smoother so we can run our own lives the best we can. The more control we give the government (meaning government workers) over our lives the less control we have over our own lives.
What is particularly disturbing about the cult status so many supporters of President Obama have placed upon this man (a "crime" of which many Conservatives have committed when it comes to President Reagan) is that when we try to make our political representatives our saviors, our leaders who we should just follow wherever they wish to take us, we run a danger of winding up with dictators. Many nations and civilations in the past have done this, with dreadful and tragic results. Do the names Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Franco, Mussolini, Pol Pot and others come to mind? They should.
We don't need our elected representatives to "lead us" to the promised land; we need our elected representatives and their fellow government workers to get out of our way so we can lead ourselves to the promised land. Remember: The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.
