Banning's the Farmhouse popular destination for travelers

At Banning's the Farmhouse restaurant, business is slowly recovering - thanks to weekend tourists

Welcome to Old America inside of Banning's the Farmhouse restaurant. The charm of American flags, red leather booths and down home food brings tourists in as they pass by on the 10.

"Our business is 30% of the weekend travelers, people who want to see what the inside looks like, and the rest regulars," said server Justin Palmer.

The Farmhouse has been in the business of comfort food and fresh pie for nineteen years. But over the past few years, not as many diners are coming in Monday through Friday.

"Business tends to be slow on weekdays due to the recession," Palmer, who has worked at the restaurant since 1991, said. "It's the weekends that business really picks up."

Travelers coming through on the 10 seem to be intrigued by the Farmhouse's exterior - it is shaped like a farmhouse, painted bright red, and guarded by Rollie, a giant rooster.

"They want something that isn't Denny's," Palmer said.

The Farmhouse is owned by Palmer's mother, Jackie Kennedy. Inside, it resembles a cozy country living room, complete with doilies, artifacts, awards, and hand-stitched messages telling diners, “I like to cook without a book.” The menu offers a wide range of options  - breakfast, lunch and dinner, including American and Mexican fare.

Palmer appreciates the regulars who keep the Farmhouse open, and has come to love his job over the years.

"I didn't like it at first, but when you're young you don't appreciate the job," he said. "Now I really like it."
