Banning Kmart Store to Close Down After 23 Years in Business

Corporate representatives tell Banning-Beaumont Patch the store will close for good in June. A liquidation sale is scheduled to start next month.

After more than 23 years at its location on Highland Springs Avenue, Banning's Kmart is closing down.

Representatives with Sears Holdings, which own the Kmart franchise, tell Patch that the location will close to the public in "early June."  A total of 91 employees will be affected.

"This store is being closed because the lease was not renewed," Sears Holdings Corporate Communications Director Howard Riefs told Banning-Beaumont Patch in an email.

According to Riefs, the closure is part of the company's efforts to reduce expenses as more customers shift to online shopping.

"Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model," he said.  "These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail – at the store, online and in the home."

The location will begin a liquidation sale on March 16, he said.

Some of the store employees that are eligible will receive a severance payment, and others will have the opportunity to apply to open positions at other area Sears or Kmart stores, according to the representative.

The Banning Kmart first opened in November of 1990.

Sure sounds like the b*tchin of a toothless walmart shopper draging her screaming snots behind her

Sorry for poor typing and not poor English. I meant to say: please understand that I did not mean that the cities of Banning and Beaumont do not work together. The staffs work very well together as do the council members.
Sheri Davis February 21, 2014 at 10:31 PM
Nice try, Greg. Guess you must have been aiming that one at Libi, because I know it wasn't for me. Sun Lakes has the love/hate relationship with WalMart. They didn't want it in Banning, yet they are only too happy to come on over into Beaumont and shop in WalMart. Go figure. And your attempt at an insult is just that - an attempt, and feeble at that. And you know nothing about my family. Get a grip, grow up, grow a spine, grow a pair, and when you've done all that, get back to me. Until then, be quiet. You can't run with me. I am tougher than that. You are just a little boy that won't win. I feel bad for you.

Why r u argueing and pointing fingers? Why not think about the 91 people, im one of them, who will be out of work. We are in shock and devastated that our store is closing. Its very hard for us to go to work knowing that the end is coming. We have made friendships with eachother and members that come in on a daily basis. Kmart will be missed...and when its gone the only thing left will be a empty store....full of memories for many!!!!
Theflyinghorse February 22, 2014 at 01:37 AM
If people want somebody to blame for Kmart closing it's all because of the city of Beaumont for allowing WalMart to come in!!! It's not because of people shopping online!!! Before WalMart came in to town Kmart was making nothing but money.. Now there's gonna be 91 people out of a job who have families to feed and bills to pay, And in this day and age you can't find a job that easy all thanks to this Government!! Most places are part time work, And NOT hiring right now.. Yeah I know it says that employees THAT ARE ELIGIBLE will receive a severance payment, That means FULL TIME employees NOT The Part Time employees!!! Just remember to all the people out there who shop at WalMart And who put 91 people out of work, You think they have good deals now?? Just wait till they put every other store out of business then you will see that they can put any price they want on their merchandise.. And why don't you people who think WalMart is so great go get a job there, They treat their employees like SH*T!!! I have never shopped at a WalMart and I never will... Kmart you will be missed....

@ Theflyinghorse...even BEFORE WalMart came to this area...I hardly shopped at KMart. Even when it was still in Beaumont. Do I feel bad for the people that will be losing their jobs, regardless of what the actual reasons are??? Of course I do. It doesn't matter if it has to do with WalMart or not. I know what it's like to lost my job because the company I work for is going out of business. Been there, done that. My own mother has had to go through that recently. She lost her full time job that she had for 12 years, it took her nearly a year to find work again, and now she's having to work 2 part time jobs just to come somewhere near close in pay to what she made at that 1 full time job alone with no benefits. Businesses close for all sorts of different reasons. We can choose to believe those provided in the article, or choose to believe whatever else people put forth. At the end of the day, more than likely, this particular KMart location had become a rather lackluster financially performing store, and that's why they are closing it. The person in the article just worded it a different way is all.
Greg Nicholson February 22, 2014 at 08:41 AM
Thank G*d that I retired and moved to sunlakes. and yes Sherri I do have a spine and I did grow up, but when you grow up you too can live in sunlakes. yes I have ran with the big dog's but now just a tired old man that golf's all day. Sherri you may grow old and when you do or if you do grow old, I hope the locals of your town treat you with respect and not blame the crack pipe hanging out of their mouths on you
Victor S Dominguez February 22, 2014 at 10:02 AM
Sun Lakes is a very effective community. Maybe they could work with the city of Banning, property owner, and County to find a business to take over that location. Sun Lakes has a lot of talented people, that could make a difference. Sorry for you folks who will loose your jobs, please keep your spirits up.

when i was a kid every town in cali had a 'woolworth' store .... kmart announced a big sweep of closures right after xmas ... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MICHELLE CHAPMAN and CHRISTINA REXRODE 12/27/11 06:34 PM ET AP NEW YORK — After a disastrous holiday shopping season, the parent company of Sears and Kmart will close at least 100 stores to raise cash – a move that sparked speculation about whether the 125-year-old retailer can avoid a death spiral fed by declining sales and deteriorating stores. Sears Holdings Corp., a pillar of American retailing that famously began with a mail-order catalog in the 1880s, declared Tuesday that it would no longer prop up "marginally performing" locations. The company pledged to refocus its efforts on stores that make money. Sears' stock quickly plunged, dropping 27 percent. The closings are the latest and most visible move by Eddie Lampert, the hands-on chairman who has struggled to reverse the company's fortunes. As rivals Wal-Mart and Target Corp. spruced up stores in recent years, Sears Holdings confronted falling sales and perceptions of dowdy merchandise. Some analysts wondered if it was already too late, questioning whether the retailer can afford to upgrade stores as it burns through its cash reserves.
ATC February 22, 2014 at 12:07 PM
Greg, I live in the middle of Banning, with an income of over 100K; yet you see nothing but poverty east of Highland Springs? Perhaps you should leave your "stuck up" gated private community a bit more and actually look around; there are plenty of good "middle class" and above people in Banning. You are exactly the type of person that gives Sun Lakes a bad name. ***** Sheri, I grew up in Beaumont (moved there in 1969) and had the same attitude as you about Banning for years. Unfortunately it is what the society "tells" you to believe. It is learned though the schools' rivalry, and even continues after you graduate through the biased reporting of the local news providers and your own fears of anyone outside of your own little world. But then I met my wife (OMG, from Banning!). I also met others from Banning. When we married, we bought a home in banning, and I have raised 3 kids here as well. So having lived for decades in BOTH communities, I think I have a good feel to make a valid comparison. Beaumont residents have a very skewed view of themselves as "better" than Banning, when they are actually quite pompous and stuck up. I know this because I lived it, saw it, WAS it, and it still exists to this day. You are a perfect example of that. Banning residents, on the other hand, are more REAL, down to earth, and much more fair when dealing with others. They have a genuine desire to see people for who they are rather than for "where" they are, unlike Beaumont residents such as yourself. ***** Do I feel safe in Banning? Other than a few areas, yes. Do I feel safe in Beaumont? Other than a few areas, yes. No difference. Banning and Beaumont both have nice areas, and they both have less than desireable areas (BTW, "new" houses are not necessarily the determining factor as to nice or not). You have in the past said that you would never let your kids attend a party in Banning. Funny, because none of my kids have ever felt threatened or unsafe at a Banning party, but my daughter's boyfriend (from Bmt) just recently got stabbed at a party...in Beaumont. ***** Yes, Banning's past leadership dropped the ball on development, both residential and commercial, and we are paying for that. However, Beaumont's leadership has built a wobbly house of cards, selling it's small town soul to the highest bigger, and you may very well end up paying for that (IMO you already are). ***** So the sad part here is that while you and Greg argue, you are both two sides of the same stuck up coin. You both need to open your eyes to the real world, and to the real people living on BOTH sides of HS.

GOOD JOB ATC!
Sheri Davis February 22, 2014 at 03:53 PM
ATC...it's not what 'society tells me to believe.' It's what I believe with my own 2 eyes, and hear with my own 2 ears. I have never said that I would never let my kids attend a party in Banning, however, I AM SAYING IT NOW!!!! Do not ever put words in my mouth like that at again. I am not pompous or stuckup. I see things for how they REALLY ARE!!! I don't care for Banning for the same reasons I don't care for much of Long Beach - an area I spent the first 12 years of my life. I go back with my folks to visit friends of my folks. I've also spent 3 years living in the Imperial Valley, and I would not want to go back living there. I know what reality is because I LIVE IT DAILY!!!
ATC February 22, 2014 at 04:53 PM
Actually, Sheri, you HAVE said it. I believe your words were something to the effect of "just another reason to never accept a Banning party invitation", and was in response to an article here on the patch about a shooting in Banning. I don't have to put words in your mouth, you do it yourself quite eloquently, such as "I try to spend as little time being in Banning as humanly possible.", or "I don't feel safe in Banning", or "so much negative drawback going on in Banning"... Those quotes are from just ONE of your posts, in just ONE article here, and just scratches the surface of your obvious bias. In fact you rarely pass up the chance to put down Banning, even though you admit to rarely even entering it. Obviously the claim that you "live it daily" applies specifically to your pompous & stuck up attitude. Sadly, I used to think like you when I only saw it from west of Highland Springs. In fact, I probably went to school with you, but fortunately I grew up and opened my eyes. You, however, never got past your Cougar/Bronco rivalry mindset.
ATC February 22, 2014 at 05:30 PM
You can make that claim about Long Beach because you've lived there. Same with the Imperial Valley. But that is not the case with Banning. You've NEVER lived in Banning. I, on the other hand, spent decades in Beaumont AND decades in Banning. And the conclusion borne from ACTUAL experience? I will put the character and integrity of Banning residents over those of Beaumont residents any day of the week. That opinion is not based on looking in from the outside, as yours is, but rather from "living it every day", to use your phrase in a much more accurate and meaningful way.
ATC February 22, 2014 at 05:40 PM
Beaumont & Banning are are the same; we are BOTH the San Gorgonio Pass. The only real separation, other than city councils (which change often enough to make that a moot point), is within the High School rivalry. That rivalry is fun when you are in your teens; it should be irrelevant once you are an adult. I suggest you act your age and set a good example for your kids, rather than talk trash about your neighbors that you've never even attempted to get to know. Or is that how you want your kids to treat others?
beaumontdave February 22, 2014 at 05:42 PM
The rivalry is supposed to be a friendly dig not an excuse for hating. Where you live in the Pass, is a matter of who your neighbors are, more than anything else. Quality people, like jerks are spread all over, so who's on your block matters more than what area and which city. Sun Lakes is filled with good people with skills and time on their hands so getting them involved, rather than alienating them should be the goal. Now if they would do something with that big ole ugly freeway sign I'd be pleased. A Big5 in the K-mart building would be great.
Sheri Davis February 22, 2014 at 06:38 PM
ATC - again you ARE putting words in my mouth. I NEVER said anything to the effect of "just another reason to never accept a Banning party invitation." As for those other statements, yes, I did say them, so I will claim them. But for the party statement claims - STOP PUTTING WORDS IN MY MOUTH!!!! I NEVER SAID EITHER STATEMENT!!! As for the high school rivalry crap, I dropped that nonsense when I graduated ages ago. I left it AT THE DOORS of the respective high schools when I graduated!!! I am clear on that, and have been since my own graduation. You obviously, are not, because YOU are the one that keeps bringing that juvenile teenage rivalry up, NOT ME!!! The only reason I bring up Beaumont vs Banning is that I see more negative coming out of Banning than I do Beaumont. Does Beaumont have negative of its own??? You bet it does. However, not to the extent that I see coming out of Banning. All the mouthy people - mostly ADULTS - dressed stupid. Pants hanging lower than they should (don't tell me it's a style, or it's fashionable...try being lazy, and that 'style' started in the jails), females dressing like the town hookers....And for the record, I DO ACT my age, I DO set a good example for my kids. If people didn't give me the dirty looks FIRST, I might be more inclined to want to get to know them. You obviously didn't think about that. I've had so-called 'adult' males hit on me, my daughter, and her friends...and we were nice to him about leaving us alone. He was the one that was rude to us. I know what I'm doing, I have my act together, I treat people precisely the way I want to be treated...but you keep crossing that line by lying. Be quiet ATC.
PrescientLogic February 22, 2014 at 07:03 PM
I'll tangle too. I graduated Beaumont High 1971. In 43 years I've learned: Sun Lakes looks like a green heaven on my IPad satellite maps app. Beaumont has way too many stop signs and a police force that abuses them. Banning loses way too many homes and businesses to fire/arson. and there's never been a good restaraunt, ever!
Greg Nicholson February 22, 2014 at 07:41 PM
What did a old person do to this woman? our folks in Sunlakes do more for the pass area then ANY GROUP!! but we do call it the compound, most homeowners are little old widows on limited income , but they have time to make quilts for the homeless kids and last yr. totals for charity was a cool million. now that is not being pompus just a fact that is never told. But I have a quick question for you locals, How many old people from Sunlakes panhandle in front of Albertson's and food for less ? everytime I go there I get 3 to 4 young people asking for a dollar
Greg Nicholson February 22, 2014 at 07:51 PM
OH yes we do hate that ugly sign but it aint ours. two years ago we tryed to buy it so we could tear it down but no way , it came with the land. Debbie Frankland bannings mayor is putting pressure on the land owners to rehab the area or the town will do it and send them the bill
Theflyinghorse February 23, 2014 at 02:16 AM
This is about Kmart!! Not about your stupid arguing between what city is better.. Because no city is any good, All they want is to get a big fat pay check!! And they don't care how they get it either or what they have to do to get it, They don't care about the people.. Just look at Highland Springs Ave and tell me how many of you would rather see all the Cattle still there then those so close together houses?? That you can hear your neighbor flush the toilet and do other things.. Those houses haven't done any good for any of these towns, Just look at all the traffic they brought.. @Sheri Davis what are you one of those people who think they are to good to shop at Kmart?? Where did you shop before WalMart came into town? You most have driven a long ways to get clothes!!! It's sad to hear that your Mom lost her job of 12 years, But if she was in retail she lost her job because of WalMart if she wasn't in retail she lost it because of this economy.. This Country don't want the American people to better them selfs, They want you to work your a$$ off and at the end of the day have nothing.. Now back to the point Kmart!! Everybody that I have talked to yesterday and today, Are all very upset to see Kmart closing they don't want to shop at WalMart.. They say WalMart employees are rude and NO help plus they say that the store is unclean... Well I guess most people out there are in a daze and it's true about you people you don't know what you have till it's gone and then when you do wake up and see what is really happening it's to late to fix it... Just remember WalMart is trying to put Stater Bros out of business by buying them!! Are you people going to let that one happen to??
ATC February 23, 2014 at 10:37 AM
You're right, I'm wrong. It wasn't you that initially made those "party" statements (although you have now). So I apologize. But I'm not wrong about your narrow minded attitude towards Banning; "I see more negative coming out of Banning than I do Beaumont....All the mouthy people - mostly ADULTS - dressed stupid...Pants hanging lower than they should...females dressing like the town hookers...." You just continue to prove that point, Sheri. You pick out a few people that you claim to see (even though you admit to very seldom even entering Banning) and paint an entire town with that brush, as if all of Banning fits that mold. If that's all you see here, I really have to wonder where in Banning you do go, because what you describe is a rarity that is just as common in Beaumont. There are plenty of good people here; people who wear their pants correctly and don't dress like hookers. And most of us have the sense to not "hit on" someone with their nose in the air. ***** Now back to KMart; it is indeed sad to see it go, but it was inevitable once Walmart opened. It would have had a better chance had it been converted into a full blown Sears. KMart was just too similar to Walmart, which was shiny and new and had a much bigger inventory as well as lower prices. But KMart was this area's first real big-box shopping opportunity, and kind of paved the way for the rest. Hopefully, it will not be vacant for long. Although the space is probably too big for a Big 5, a Sports Authority would fit pretty well and is sorely needed.
rubberband February 23, 2014 at 11:32 AM
Mouthy people...women dressed like the town hookers? O. Geezus...sounds like all the family from my Dads side found you guys. We flew them out from back east 30 years ago for an ill-advised family reunion, ditched them after they were all booked for assault after a ruckus at a steakhouse (O.K. it was a Sizzler we aren't rich) and I guess they never left...think "Christmas Vacation" with a bunch of people that sound, dress, act like that horrible family from "The Heat" but make them stereotyped Italians. Sheri, those folks are my bad. Truly sorry.
ATC February 23, 2014 at 01:10 PM
You never fail to entertain, RB; thanks :). My point is and always has been that you will find what you spend your time looking for. If you go through life looking for racism, you will see racism everywhere you look (even when its not really there). If you are constantly looking for gangsta low-lifes, then every kid who dresses differently will, in your mind, be a thug, even if he's actually an honors student. If, on the other hand, you go through life looking for the good in others and assuming that even those who look or act differently (or live in a lower income area) are good people, then you'd be amazed at what you'll find and how much more enriched your life will be. ***** While I grew up in Beaumont/CV, I met the love of my life in Banning and we've been together now for 35 years. We actually dated WHILE in high school, and we both got alot of negative pressure from our respective classmates. While we both rose above those petty ideas, it is really sad that it still exists, not just in teens, but in adults who should have outgrown it by now. Kids learn how to treat others who are different the way their parents do so. Luckily, I had an open mind, and acquired many friends from both sides of the Pass. My kids have also been raised with that open mind, and understand that they are not better or worse than anyone simply because of where they live.
Jean Wilson February 25, 2014 at 12:09 AM
Once again this is about kmart..nothing else quit argueing over what city is better WHO CARES!!!!! There r 91 of us who r lossing there jobs!!!! Kmart has been around forever...what pisses me off is now that people know we r ckosing weve been busy and all they care about is when r the sales starting...dont get me wrong there r plenty of our members who r just as sad as we r to see our store closing...i will say this where was all this caring before...if we were this busy before we wouldnt be closing....

Laurie March 05, 2014 at 07:07 AM
My problem has always been the same with Kmart. Last week I was there looking for a garden item. I went to the Garden Shop and asked where I might find that item. The employee told me it wasnt outside and I'd have to go inside the store to find that. I looked--they had nothing like that there. I came upon one male and two female employees talking together in a group and I had to ask them where I could find that item. Rather than looking for it with me or Heaven forbid finding out if they even stock that item, they all looked at each other and just shrugged, not knowing what to do, apparently. It's that lack of customer service and also lack of pricing labels on items (I was also looking for some beach towels that day) that makes a customer just give up because no one cares. How many times while checking out have you heard the cashier ask over the store PA System--"price check on register 3"? Just TOO OFTEN! To me, their customer service has always been awful and Im not surprised at all that their store is closing. I wish the best for the GOOD employees there. That part is sad.
Theflyinghorse March 21, 2014 at 02:04 AM
@Laurie your right there are some really useless employees that work at Kmart, And something should've been done about that way before!!! Since the first day of liquidation on Sun the 16Th I have never seen such Pigs in my life, I can't say these people are Pigs Because Pigs have better manners then them!!.. It's sad to see what the human race has turned into, You people have on respect for other people or for the store or for the employees you have trashed Kmart!! You don't even know how to raise your kids, It's sad to see what the next generation is going to be like. I'm tired of hearing most of the people come in to the store and say well I can get that cheaper at Walmart, Then take your trashy self right back to Walmart that's where you've been shopping since they opened, Plus it may be cheaper but it's not made as good as what Kmart sales!! It's shocking how stupid the American people are, You put up a sign that says Liquidation Sale 10 to 20% off and the store is packed!! Kmart puts a ad out that says Sale 30 to 35% off and you get nobody shopping!! Kmart has made more money since Sun the 16Th, Then they have in the last 6 months!! The employees are working their A$$ES off, Trying to clean up the store after the trashy customers have turned it upside down. The Employees should be given a raise in pay for dealing with the trash customers and the long hours of working 5 or 6 days a week, Taking away from their family time most of them do care about their kids, husbands, wifes, girlfriends, boyfriends and their life outside of work!!
Libi Uremovic March 21, 2014 at 08:11 AM
'...The Employees should be given a raise in pay for dealing with the trash customers and the long hours of working 5 or 6 days a week...' ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ instead the line workers will be 'rewarded' with losing their jobs and taking the blamed for the store's closing....
