UPDATE: Brookside Avenue May Open Next Week

City says it's making sure that when the road is opened, it stays open for good.

The City of Beaumont says that the Brookside Avenue may be open to the public as early as next week.

Still, City Manager Alan Kapanicas cautioned that they do not want to open it prematurely.

“We do not want to open it before we know there is nothing to fix,” Kapanicas said at Tuesday’s city council meeting.

and by Kapanicas’ standards the bridge is ahead of schedule. 

“We normally ask for a year to build a bridge,” he said.

, but was then closed down a day later for finishing touches. 

The road, which used to be just one lane in each direction, will now feature: 

  • A new bridge to prevent flooding on the road
  • 1 lane eastbound
  • 1 lane westbound
  • 2 bike lanes
  • A sidewalk that's 7.5'-10' in certain spots
