UPDATE: Brookside Avenue May Open Next Week

City says it's making sure that when the road is opened, it stays open for good.

The City of Beaumont says that the Brookside Avenue may be open to the public as early as next week.

Still, City Manager Alan Kapanicas cautioned that they do not want to open it prematurely.

“We do not want to open it before we know there is nothing to fix,” Kapanicas said at Tuesday’s city council meeting.

and by Kapanicas’ standards the bridge is ahead of schedule.

“We normally ask for a year to build a bridge,” he said.

, but was then closed down a day later for finishing touches.

The road, which used to be just one lane in each direction, will now feature:

  • A new bridge to prevent flooding on the road
  • 1 lane eastbound
  • 1 lane westbound
  • 2 bike lanes
  • A sidewalk that's 7.5'-10' in certain spots

On schedule? By my recollection it was to be finished by the end of May...and since the traffic on Oak View has been dramatically changed with the detour it can't come soon enough.

The Brooklyn bridge is a bridge, this is a tiny thing that goes over a flood channel. saying this sort of thing should take a year to build and anything under that is ahead of schedule is politician talk.

If you work in construction you would know that schedules are just estimate of time. If you think that you could speed it up, take a shovel & go help.

Yes, schedules are just estimates. But there's also an old business proverb that applies here: Don't promise what you can't deliver. And if the bridge is ahead of schedule, why didn't the city post what the scheduled time for completion would be, instead of a May 31 deadline that they knew they had no chance of achieving?

The one thing Alan Kapanicas is very good at predicting is just how much money he personally will make from Mello Roos taxes.
