Mountain Climber Dies After Falling 100 Feet Near Idyllwild

The unidentified rock climber fell from the "Vampire" climb at Tahquitz Rock on Friday, according to emergency personnel.

A mountain climber has died after falling an estimated 100 feet near Idyllwild, police and fire officials tell Patch.

The incident was first reported around 10:45 a.m. in the "Vampire" climb area of Humber Park, which is described as a difficult route on Tahquitz Rock by mountain climbing enthusiasts.

Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Melody Hendrickson says a helicopter was sent to the scene to help with rescue attempts.

However, according to Riverside County Sheriff's Spokesman Angel Ramos, the coroner was called to the scene just before 1:30 p.m.

Ramos says emergency logs indicated the climber had fallen 100 feet, and was trapped underneath rocks.  A friend had called 911 for help.

It was not immediately clear if that friend was also injured.
