Update: Knife-Wielding Suspect Shot Dead by Cabazon Deputies

Update 11 p.m.:

A sheriff's deputy shot a knife-wielding man near Cabazon Tuesday after the man allegedly ignored requests to stop his advances on the law enforcement officer, the sheriff's department reports.

Deputies responded to a frontage road just south of Interstate 10, in between Main Street and Haugen-Lehmann Way, at 4:59 p.m. after getting reports of a man armed with knives, according to Sheriff's Sergeant Lisa McConnell.

"The deputies had recieved information from the Moreno Valley Police Department that the subject was en route to the city of Moreno Valley," McConnell said Tuesday night.  "A deputy from the Cabazon station actually located the subject walking over on Railroad Avenue."

That deputy tried to contact the man, but he pulled out a knife "and he advanced towards the deputy," McConnell said.

"The deputy then gave several commands for the suspect to drop the knife," she said.  "He didn't, and he continued to advance on the deputy, ignored his commands and that's when the officer involved shooting occurred."

McConnell said she did not know if Moreno Valley police, who is also staffed by the sheriff's department, knew why the suspect was in the area.  It is also unclear at this point if he was wanted in connection to any crimes, or had a warrant for his arrest, but that information is expected to be revealed in the coming days as the investigation continues and his identity can be released once next-of-kin are notified, she told Patch Tuesday night near the scene of the shooting.

The man was alone when found walking, and no vehicles that he may have been driving were in sight of the crime scene, she added.

The deputy who fired the gun-- who was uninjured-- was placed on paid leave, per department policy.

Cabazon and homicide investigators are handling the case.
