TRAFFIC ALERT: Redlands Bicycle Classic Racing Thru Beaumont Friday

The third stage of the Inland Empire race, now in its 30th year, moves to Beaumont on Friday.

The city of Beaumont is preparing for the arrival of thousands of bicyclists taking part in the world-renowned Redlands Bicycle Classic.

The third stage of the Inland Empire race, now in its 30th year, moves to Beaumont on Friday, during which officials will shut down a number of streets and intermittently close others to facilitate riders as they compete for time on routes ranging from 72 to 120 miles, circumnavigating the community.

The opening stage of the Classic got underway Wednesday in Highland, featuring men's and women's circuits totaling just over 100 miles.

Teams will be in Big Bear Thursday for trial runs, then on to Beaumont, according to organizers.

The city said the following hard closures will be in effect beginning 8 a.m. Friday, requiring motorists to detour:

  • Beaumont Avenue northbound, between Sixth and Seventh streets
  • Highland Springs Avenue, between Cherry Valley Boulevard and Eighth Street
  • Magnolia Avenue, between Sixth and Eighth streets
  • Oak Valley Parkway, between Highland Springs and Starlight avenues, and between Desert Lawn Drive and Palmer Avenue
  • Orange Avenue, between Sixth and Eighth streets
  • Palm Avenue southbound, between Oak Valley Parkway and Sixth Street
  • Sixth Street, between Beaumont and Palm avenues

Rolling closures are planned on other streets as cyclists complete their circuits, and drivers will be required to yield until riders go by, officials said.

The final stages of the Classic are scheduled Saturday and Sunday in Redlands.

The event is considered the opener for the USA National Racing Calendar.
