TRAFFIC ALERT: Full Closures Planned on Inland Freeway This Week

If you take the 215 freeway north of Riverside, you may want to plan ahead.

Overnight closures are scheduled this week on both sides of Interstate 215 in Highgrove for work on a railroad bridge, and motorists are advised to seek alternate routes to avoid traffic congestion.

On Wednesday night, beginning at 11 p.m., Caltrans will shut down the entire northbound side of I-215 between Iowa Avenue and Barton Road. The closure will remain in effect until 5 a.m. Thursday.

Another northbound closure is planned Thursday night, during the same hours.

Crews will close both the south- and northbound sides of the freeway on Friday and Saturday, beginning at 11:30 p.m. The full closures will continue into the mid-morning hours. Caltrans warned weekend travelers to be prepared for detours Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Officials will be taking southbound traffic off the freeway at Barton Road, down La Cadena Drive, returning to the freeway at the La Cadena on-ramp. Northbound motorists will be taken off the freeway via Iowa Avenue and routed back to the freeway at Barton.

Additional closures are scheduled throughout April. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad Bridge Project involves erecting a span to replace an aged one farther north over the freeway. The new bridge is part of a 7.5- mile freeway widening project underway between Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
