If you've noticed the heavy duty construction equipment along Sunset Avenue in Banning lately, then you've probably also realized that you can't access Interstate 10 from the roadway north of the freeway.  And don't expect to anytime soon.

City officials say that the westbound onramps and offramps at Sunset Avenue are scheduled to be closed through April 27.  They were closed on March 16 by the the Riverside County Transportation Department.

"The closure is due to improvements taking place for the Sunset Avenue Grade Separation Project," Banning City Spokesman Bill Manis said in an announcement of the work issued March 13.  "The improvements include relocating utilities, grading, and repaving."

Manis suggested the following detours during this time:

  • I-10 eastbound— Exit Sunset Ave. – south to Lincoln & Westward
  • I-10 eastbound— Exit 22nd Street to Ramsey Street or Lincoln Street
  • I-10 westbound— Exit 22nd Street to Ramsey Street or Lincoln Street
