Cabazon Water District Plans Nature Park in Jensen Canyon, Residents Invited to Free Barbecue Sunday

Submitted by Steve Moore on behalf of the Cabazon Water District.

A free barbecue and community meeting will be held Sunday, June 5 in scenic Jensen Canyon to talk with residents about creating a nature park in the mountains south of Cabazon.

The Cabazon Water District is applying for grant money to pay for day hiking and horseback riding trails, picnic areas, a convenience store and an interpretive center to celebrate the town's Old West heritage.

The new park will serve the recreational needs of the entire community, especially those residents living on the east side of Cabazon. It will be easily accessible and convenient for the elderly and for nearby families without reliable transportation.

Jensen Canyon is a watershed area of a couple hundred acres owned by Cabazon Water.

"We're looking forward to seeing all our friends and neighbors for a day of good old-fashioned family fun," said water board president R.D. Cash. "We hope the community will join us and work on one of the most exciting projects in Cabazon's history.”

The event is from noon to 5 p.m., and residents and guests are asked to meet at Elm and Helen streets, and then head south on Elm toward the mountains. Follow event signs. All-terrain vehicles will ferry those attending up a dirt road for the Sunday outing in Jensen Canyon.

Consultants will make a brief presentation about the project and then ask the audience to present their ideas for a community park on the east side of Cabazon. Guided horseback rides in the canyon will be offered to children under 12 years old.
